In the old days (LOL) you didn't compete at your home pow-wow because you were supposed to take care of your visitors. You also didn't compete if you were head dancers either. Well, that is what I remember.

Critical Mass is an unknown quantity at this point
You should ask the "Magic 8 Ball" this question and see where your answer lies..

I agree

I think it's a social faux paw (?) to compete at your own powwow. As a community if we host a powwow, then we should all act as hosts/hostesses. Make the visitors welcome. On the other hand if the powwow is in a large urban area, maybe hosted by a university/business and you live in that city then by all means dance competition.

I say no Damit!!

In my opinion it's really unfair to do this. this was done at a pow wow i went to this past weekend. When you compete at the powwow where your from it shows that you are money hungry and greedy. It's also unfair too because all these people that have travelled some distance and they don't get in because it was the peeple that where from the friggin rezzz. So it really bugzz me when i see that, it goes to show that it's only about the money. Oh and if these people also say there from someplace else, that's dispicable too, they should know better. If they want to dance at there own pow wow they should have a special or exibition dance.

I'd stay away from those Magic 8 Balls! Each of them is possessed by a demon because those Magic 8 Balls tell no lies.

I would dress in my best rig to support, but I wouldn't compete against our visitors.

Again.....in a perfect POWWOW world.....lol

I agree....shows alot of disrespect, greed, and money hungry to compete in your own 'host' powwow. It really bothers me to see all the 'locals' win, especially when you KNOW there are better dancers comin in from all across the country. *S*. And its worse when the Head Staff wins......jeesh. I think it there should be a powwow law against that. Not only are they being paid to be headstaff but then win at the same time? *S* Well then again, its 'all up to the committee's'. Well those of you who still dance just to dance....hoooray. We have to have some peers out there for our lil ones.

i think it is personally "cheap azz" to compete at your own home community's pow wow - all year long you place and you are from that particular rez and all of a sudden you're from the town right next door at that rez's pow wow!! or miraculously you're from your husband/wife's/boy/girlfriends' rez....cheap!! then you're all up there all happy and not a bit shamed out - wonderin why ppl are "suddenly" not talkin to you...

or when people have specials and let their in-laws dance and go through all these songs and elimination rounds and all of a sudden - your brother-in-law wins!! OMG the shock of it all!!

we should start namin names of people or places - maybe then it'll stop...or at least people would stop going to that first nation's pow wow since they allow their members to compete and we'd all stop wastin our time...

greedy nishers,lol

Oooo geezzz don't get me started on namin names. I can name plenty. Another thing happened when i traveled way the hell up too prince albert area rezz, and i'm in ontario, that is a long drive, any hoo all the people that placed where from the rezz like across the road and we felt like minorities at this pow wow because i think we were like the only people there that were not from the rezz across the road or from any part of sask everyone was local or somethin, but you know you gotta remember that it's like that everywhere you go, it's too bad it has to be like that, i even heard of people promising there pow wow buddies will place if they go to there rezz to dance, and when i heard that i was like " Is there some sort of secret society within the powwow circuit?" I mean do you have to be part of this elite group of pow wow nishes just to win?? LOL, holy sounds real crazzy eh, lmao!

havta agree with you on that "elite group of pow wow niches" comment - its beginning to get like its WHO you know and HOW many people you know is in direct coralation (dang must be late in the day - forgot how to spell) to how well you place sometimes..
