Thumbs up NMAI Pow Wow - could it be annual?

For those of us who missed it, the NMAI pow wow seems like it was a pretty decent dance...from family and friend's accounts and the numerous photos anyways. Is there anyway that the NMAI Pow Wow Committee could be swayed to turn this into an annual event? I'd bet it could take over as the top east coast dance in a few years.

I think this powwow defnitely has the potential to take over the east coast....i've heard numerous rumors regarding making this an annual event & as the interview stated, NMAI just doesnt seem to have the man power to keep this baby going, well at least not at the moment. Seeing as how there was a 3 yr gap between this powwow and the one back in 2002, i wouldn't mind waiting another few years for this to come around again. It would be a nice change from the usual circuit....

You also have to keep in mind that the Washington DC Metropolitan Area is NOT "powwow friendly" meaning, it's VERY EXPENSIVE, parking is rediculous, there aren't any camp sites (many of our folks camp from pw to pw) & hotels/lodging is very expensive for a 3 day event, the city traffic is a monster of it's own, the list can go on & on, so having this event every few years would seem to work out great!

Talking Change the Date, Please!!

The Pow Wow was great for the East Coast. But we need to change the date. I don't like the fact that we are competing with the Fort Hall's and Little Shell's of the Pow Wow world.

The NMAI has an established tradition with the third week in September already!

The groud breaking ceremony in 1999 and the opening ceremony in 2004 were both in mid September. I know because I was there singing!

We didn't have the number of drums that this event could of had attend and the attendance was kind of on the low side. I hope they didn't go into the "red" with this event?

I am sure "Who Me" will read this and report to Terry and Jackie. I applaud the indoor venue, but this event was not as big as I wished for. A September date right after Tribes will solve this no problem. If MCI is not available next time, the University of Maryland has two on campus arenas, Comcast Center which seats 18K and the old Cole Field House that seats 14K. Plus the campus has its own Marriott hotel with a new state of the art, Performing Arts Center, Clarice Smith Center there as well. I am sure the rent will be cheaper than the MCI fees! The NMAI cultural center is not that far away as well for shuttle service back and forth.

Finally............the hotels in College Park will be cheaper for the drums and dancers families. Plus I heard some dancers stayed in College Park at the Cherry Hill campground next to campus.

Not a sermon..........just a thought!

Peace!

Good post. I had many of the same thoughts. While the powwow was awesome, I too expected a little larger turnout -esp. for drums. I think the date change would help alot.

Also, an indoor venue is a must! Although College Park may not be the safest place for a Duke fan sometimes ( *L* - any ACC bball fans here?), I think Comcast or Cole would provide comparable accomodations to what was provided at MCI. The only downside is whether NMAI would have a problem hosting this outside DC limits, thinking it would not attract the public in the same way. There's a convenience to MCI for DC residents that would not be there if it moved to College Park (or anywhere else outside the city limits or not near a Metro stop) and I think if it moved out there, you'd get far less than the 35K plus that attended at MCI last weekend. But the convenience and cost for dancers and singers would be significantly better. That should be a significant factor any decision about putting on this dance again.

Pros and cons both ways but bottom line, it will always be a good event. Hopefully, it will be back soon.

When you go to College Park, just don't wear any Bluedevil regalia!

There is going to be a Veteran's Day pow wow at the University of Maryland in November. I thought I had the flyer, but I'll find details later.

The big problem with the University of Maryland is that parking is extremely scarce. The Metro is almost a mile away from the east side of campus, and traffic in that area is a bear!

There shouldn't be a problem with NMAI taking it to the suburbs, but the planning, publicity and execution would have to be really tight.

I'm sure more will be revealed.

There is a camp site in Maryland called Cherry Hill it is near the
intersection of the beltway (495) and 95 where 95 heads to Baltimore. There is metro bus from the camp ground to College Park station.

I know it a little late for the info but just want to added it.

There a FREE College shuttle bus that run from the College to the College Park Metro. Run every 10 or 20 min. NO COLLEGE ID NEEDED for this shuttle bus or the bus that circles the College. All other College bus's you need a College ID.
