NMAI National Powwow: update
The theme of this years powwow is "Origins and Evolution of the Powwow."
Each day different branches of the military will be honored because warrior societies were the basis for powwow dancing. Each grand entry will be spoken in the language of the 3 different emcees to portray the traditional camp criers. During Saturday evenings session, "original dancers" will interpret the earliest form of each dance category immediately before the contest. The announcers and original dancers are working on the narration describing the origins of each dance: Men's fancy, traditional, straight, grass and Women's fancy, jingle, northern traditional and southern traditional. Also included will be a gourd dance with the headsmen of the Kiowa Gourd Clan to interpret the origins and evolution. An "Origins and Evolutions of the Powwow" Panel will take place on Thursday, August 11, 2005 from noon to 1:30 pm in the National Museum of the American Indian. Powwow Head Staff discuss the origins, evolution, traditions, and impact of powwows. The new headman dancer is Ardell Scalplock (replacing Spike Draper). Visit the new website that was put up today: http://www.nmai.si.edu/powwow2005/information.html

Curious
I'm rolling into town on thrusday morning so that i can see the museum, since i haven't had a chance to see it yet....
What i'm wondering about, is how long is the wait to get into the museum? Is it really an hour long, is there something I can do to not have to wait in a long line? Any tips would be helpful... Thanks! |

There is normally not a long line to get into the NMAI. However, once inside, there may be lines to get into certain exhibits. Starting on Friday at 9 am, there will be shuttles to and from the NMAI to the MCI Center. Don't forget to roll into the ToM ToM Club (in the Adams Morgan district) on Friday and Saturday after the powwow. The powwow is scheduled to end before 11pm each night!

Are the Musuem people or anybody else making a video of this event? Sounds like alot of important and valuable information will be discussed and it would be a great opportunity to pass the information on via video for many generations to come and for those who are unable to attend, in addition it would bring in income for the musuem. Does anyone know? |

Yes, a DVD is being planned as I type. It will take a while to debut because of the large amount of footage that will be shot during the weekends activities.
