Thumbs up Annual Kaw Powwow Begins Friday West of Washungah Bay

Just in case any one is interested or needs more information on the Kaw Nation Pow Wow that will be held this coming weekend..August 5 - 7. The Orangepridendns1 family will be there camping, dancing, boating, visiting, eating....you get the idea!!!

KAW CITY — The annual Kaw Powwow will be held Friday through Sunday at the tribal powwow grounds one-half mile west of the Washungah Bay entrance of Kaw Lake.

Head man dancers is Colt Donelson and the 2005-2006 Kaw Powwow Princess is Haley Chrisco. Donelson is of Kaw, Osage, Potawatomi and Cheyenne descent. His Kaw name is Ho'-Tan-Ma'n-Yin, which means "walking thunder." He is of the Deer clan. Donelson is a 2004 graduate of Shidler High School and is a second-year student at Northern Oklahoma College pursuing a degree in forestry management.

He is the son of Little Carol Clark and is the grandson of Naomi Clark, both of Kaw City, and the late Elmer Clark. He is also the grandson of Fannie Mae Beartrack Donelson and the late Bob Donelson Jr. He is a ranch hand for Dave Jacques at the 7D Ranch in Osage County and also works for Wyatt Construction.

Chrisco is the daughter of Steven Chrisco of Glenpool and Robin Bellmard of Falls Church, Va. She is the granddaughter of the late Ed and Fern Chrisco of Shidler and Kennis and Lily Bellmard of Ponca City.

Chrisco has received an advanced diploma and an international baccalaureate certificate in theater arts. She finished her first year of college at Northern Virginia Community College and will transfer to Oklahoma State University this fall.

Other head staff include: head singer, Scott George; emcee, Brad Killscrow; head lady dancer, Carol Estes; head gourd group, Lenape Gourd Society; arena director, Andrew Gray; color guard, Kaw Veterans; and water boys, Dylan Townsend and Damion LittleDeer.

Friday evening activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with gourd dancing. Contests scheduled for Friday evening include: tiny tots (6 and under), junior girls cloth/buckskin (7-15), junior girls fancy shawl/jingle (7-15), junior boys straight (7-15), junior boys traditional (7-15) and junior boys fancy (7-15). The Lenape Gourd Society will give an exhibition stomp dance Friday evening after the powwow.

Saturday morning there will be turtle races for children and adults at 11 a.m. The Saturday afternoon program will begin at 2 p.m. with gourd dancing. All specials will be held in the afternoon.

Supper will be served at 5 p.m. Evening gourd dancing will begin at 6 p.m. Grand entry will be at 7:30 p.m., led by the Kaw Veterans. Contests to be held Saturday evening will be women's cloth, women's buckskin, women's fancy and jingle, and women's golden age division (55 and over).

Church services will be held Sunday morning at 10 a.m. under the arbor. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Sunday afternoon program will be set aside for Kaw Day. Kaw Tribal members are invited to participate in family specials and fellowship.

Specials will begin at 2 p.m. Supper break will be at 5 p.m. and the evening gourd dancing will begin at 6 p.m. Grand entry will be at 7:30 p.m. led again by the Kaw Veterans. Contests are men's straight, men's traditional/grass, men's fancy and men's golden age (55 and over).

There will be arts and crafts booths with Native American artwork for sale and concessions will be available. Admission is free and open to the public.
