I am thinking of heading up that way from Charlotte. My hubby isn't into the powwows so I would be going and returning on Saturday...debating on whether it's worth it or not...
What type of atmosphere is there at this powwow? What I mean is this: I am new to powwows and will be going alone (or maybe with my daughter), I don't dance (yet) and have no desire to feel like a complete outsider/spectator. The NC powwows that I have been to were attended by some very great people who make you feel as though they have known you their whole lives. Guys, in your opinion, would it be worth a 6 hour drive (roundtrip)? |

heck yea
oh yes. this is one of the best powwows in this region. There will be a lot of feel-good drums, and tons of good dancers. the food is good and vendors are good. it wil be worth it. its a 6 hour roundtrip for me too but i will be there for the whole weekend. I am the head singer of Waterbird, so all u pws.com folks comin, drop in and give us some feedback. Does anyone know if we will be on the stage this year now that it is finished (i think).....?

We used to go to this powwow all the time and drove more than 1,000 miles to get there. Don't think we'll make it this year though. It's a good powwow, although it does get hot. I see that in the past couple of years that they've cut down on their prize money. Different powwow committee I guess. Anyway, everybody have a good time and enjoy the fireworks, if they have them. I remember one year it was so foggy that we couldn't even see the fireworks. All we saw was a red/orange glow in the fog every once in a while. That was funny.

Fireworks this year are on Monday, July 4th at 10 p.m. so most of the pow wow people will be home by then I'm sure. As for the stage, I doubt it. To my knowledge there will be a large tent next to the stage area. Right now, it's kind of muddy over there, but hopefully it won't rain until then. And yes, it has been hot this past week so make sure to keep hydrated if you plan to contest or dance during the day.

To answer everyone's questions:
Grand entries: Friday 7:30 p.m. Saturday 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday 1 p.m. There is an alternate site, but it's not large at all and would be very crowded if it rains. The rain site is the multi-purpose building adjacent to the fairgrounds. Contest registration: Friday 5-6:30 p.m. Saturday 9 a.m. - 12 noon (no exceptions) Point system will start on Friday at Grand entry.

It rained last year and we were under cover anyway so it should be fine, and I really doubt there will be any gourd dancing. That would rock if there was, but most likely not. See everyone there, hope everyone has a safe trip there, and good luck...

The rain site would be used if its get too muddy under the tent.
To my knowledge, there won't be any gourd dancing at this pow wow.
