Question Question about Mescalero Apache Reservation

ok, i have a question. my husband is part Mescalero Apache. we are moving from texas to colorado in september thanks to uncle sam. We want to go by way of new mexico so that we can stop at the reservation but being that neither one of us have ever been that way (well i havent) I dont know if that reservation is open to the public. If anyone has any information that might help I would greatly appreciate it. Please dont take this as a "tourist" question because it isnt. this is for my husband and his heritage. Thank you in advance, Melissa

Settle down sparky. All I am saying is you have to be careful and thoughtful when doing things. Being straightforward is at least being honest. Sometimes, we get tired of people coming to gawk at us in our communities cause we don't like being viewed like wild animals in a zoo. Not saying that you meant this or anything, its just sometimes that is how it feels. One day not too long ago, 2 tour buses stopped by our tribal school and started taking pictures. Some approached me and said that they had never seen a real ndn before and wanted to take a picture with me so that they could show their friends when they got home. You see how you would react if this happens to you. Most people are harmless but occasionally there a few freaks.

OMG!!! I would be upset if i had been there and saw that. i dont mean it that way and never did but on the other thread i cant even explain myself without getting cut down because im some "city chick" well im sorry that my family doesnt pass on traditions and knowledge of heritage like they should have but at least i want to find out and teach my son what i missed. we got to pow wows when we can and he loves to watch the dancers and hear the music. you know the thought never crossed my mind to walk up to someone on that reservation and have my husband say hey my dad said I was part apache and im here to find out what thats all about. that isnt the way we are at all. I have deep respect and love for the native culture and Frybread and buffalo burgers (hehehe). so thank you for knowing that we are not some city slickers going to look at real indians or to be able to say we have been on a reservation. I hope this didnt sound defensive because that wasnt my tone at all while i was typing it :) :)
