Correction. Child Molesters are everywhere. They are usually right in our midst. They are a relative, a teacher, a friend's brother (or sister), an ice cream vendor, the guy (or gal) next door... We are usually only able to 'identify' them after they are caught. This is the thing: as parents, we need to teach our children what is appropriate behavior from others and what is not. When is touching inappropriate no matter who the individual is. We also have to make that child understand that it is not their fault if they are molested and that if they are molested that it is safe to come to us, tell us and that they will be believed.

Thanks for the info. Like others have said, they are everywhere, put it's good to know their last known areas. Here in Cali, we have major problem with group homes for sex offenders without disclosure to the neighbors. So we make a habit of running Megan's law every month, anyone can run it. I was shocked to know so many were in my zip code which is considered ' a safe area', yeah right. So I urge everyone to run it. There are several sites on the Web, it is free so don't use any that wants to charge you, just Google 'Megans' law and the free site will come up.

I agree w/everyone that they are everywhere. The sad thing is that it will be the one that you least expect. They come in all shapes, sizes, races, ethnic backgrounds, financial statuses, etc. It is not the poor person, it is also the financially stable ones as well. It could be a relative, a best friend, a co-worker, a president, a CEO, a judge, a police officer, a teacher, and yes, a minister. We just have to be on guard and teach our children about this.

Last night I went to a powwow here in my home town. I was explaining to a friend that usually children were let to run and play and I used to think this was fine. But I told him that I didn't think it was safe anymore to do that. Too many preditors are at large now. So I thank you for the info. I am in the central US and I was thinking that the powwows would be a new place for preditors to look for their victims. That was a scary thought and here today I read your post, so I'm going to be watching the powwows I go to.

watching......watching.......for what? so you watch...by the time you react you've WAITED too long!! And, WHAT are you all WATCHING for? Does a molester look a certain way? There are still fools willing to let their children stay overnight at Michael Jackson's house...so even the most blatant signs seem to be ignored....

It has NEVER been safe to let our children run around. Wasn't safe 30+ years ago when I was small and isn't now. There were 'predators' then and predators now. They aren't just suddenly 'at large'. Pow-wows are not a 'new place' these 'predators' are frequenting to find victims. If you are focusing on the pow-wow aspect you are missing the whole point and need a reality check.

If it wasn't for the fact this thread did allow for a true alert of what constitutes a child molester, I'd almost label this thread as shameful in that it gives the false impression that predators have suddenly targeted pow-wows in order to find victims. One local police bulletin does not an epidemic make.

Last year about this time there was a quinceanera being held at a Catholic Church. This huge Latino family and all their close friends were there celebrating the young lady's coming of age. Someone noticed her little sister missing. She was five years old. They found her..left for dead, limp as a ragdoll, sodomized and beaten behind one of the Church buildings. As luck would have it the young many who did this was seen coming back to the party in a somewhat disheveled condition about the time the little girl was noticed as being missing. It never got to court. The guy's in that little girl's family beat the crap out of that young man--a friend and close neighbor of the family, someone they trusted and loved... Sex in instances of rape and molestation are about power and domination; usually the individual feels inadequate about some part of him or herself, frequently they were abused themselves and in their own anger and shame they act out against others. Anyway, if anyone reading this thread takes anything constructive away from it, it should be that we can not love our kids too much, protect our kids too much. We need to educate them about respect and not letting anyone touch them inappropriately AND we need them to feel they can come to us and tell us when something has occurred. Too many molestation cases I hear that Mom's boyfriend or husband did the molestation and the child waited to actually say what had happened or when they did tell Mom she refused to believe them. If you want a target for watching here's one...Single mothers are great sources of supply for molesters. They can be real pushovers if they are too needy and want a relationship too much, or maybe he pays the rent and helps her make ends meet. Single mothers need to focus on raising their children and should never let their child's welfare take second place to romance, sex or security. A decent guy won't make a gal choose. If you are cruising the personals as a single mother and see an ad that specifically says a guy is looking for a woman who has little kids don't say 'ah, ain't that sweet?' It ain't sweet. It should be a big, fat signal to run the other way. Pervs use the personals all the time. There is a time and place for a guy and gal to discuss his and/or her kids and that personals ad is not one of them...

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now. I just get so riled when topics like this come up. I spend most of my professional life helping victims of abuse get their lives in order because of this SH*T so please excuse my passion....

for reals dude ^^^ - single moms are prime targets for these guys. can't tell you how many times i've heard of a young person telling their mother and her not believing their own child. just end up sending their kids to stay with the grandparents (well at least they aren't being molested) so they can stay with the guy. then they break up and THEN they believe their children and try everything to get the guy in jail - too little too late i say...cuz you end up with an adult person with major issues...

more and more people have to realized that these molesters are the guy next door, their bestfriends, teachers, relatives - EVERYONE can be a potential molester. as a parents you should see everyone like that for your kids safety. and believe your children!!!

If we think about it, if a child's own parent can be a molester, then so can the person next door, the teacher, etc. We just cringe to think about it because it is so awful.
