Hey - a friend of mine is going to Toronto at the end of this month - what should she def not miss?? What should she avoid?? What is a must....tell it!!!

First off tell your budy to pick up a free newspaper called "Now" Magazine as soon as she gets to town. (it's printed every thurs.) They are available every where and list all the clubs in town and what's happening i.e. live music, dance clubs, threatre, etc., etc.
If she's into urbun ndn stuff the Native Canadian Center on Spadina Road (and Bloor Street) uasually has something happening. Also there is a place called Native Women in the Arts located 401 Ricmond Street and Spadina Ave. They are devoted to women inthe arts and also have various events happening. They can also be reached online thru "Red Sky".
Also the local news paper "Tansi" can be found online and also listed events inthe city.
Of course if you would like even more detail just PM me. However, I think this is a good start.

Thanks Smokey, my love, for posting this for me! And thanks so much to everyone who's responded! I've been to the Center once before....so might have to check it out again! Only 1 day in the big City at the end of this month, so I'd like to make the most of it!

Can anyone think of any other places I should look for/at between Toronto and the Ferry at Tobermory? I'm actually heading up to the Sheguindah powwow that weekend.

actually i work in the tourism industry and could help you out, but i need to know how long your stay/travel, have a car? interests, (obviously powwows).....i gave the earlier info cause it sounded like you were going to be in T.O. for a while....i could fix you up with some goot "ontario" ndn sheeet to check out. juss gotta let me know.

Actually, the last few years I have been making up to Canada at least once a year. I have some good Nish friends in North Bay that I go to visit, and depending on the time of year, will hit whatever powwow is happening in the area. Most of my time to this point in Toronto has been spent there in the city for the CANAB powwow, so I haven't had much chance to get to around and see a whole lot. My bud did take me to the Center during a previous visit...in fact, she actually works at the Friendship Center in North Bay.

Of course, I have managed to make it to the Grand Poobah of Native attractions....Rama! hehehehehe....though I left much sadder than when I entered! hehehehe

One place she told me to hit in the city was John Beads (?). Is this the happenin' joint for us crafty types?

I will actually have a bit of time while traveling from Toronto to Tobermory...so anything along the way that might be worth a stop would be nice to know about. From natural areas to gift shops. (Gawd, that's asking for a lot isn't it!?!)

Any suggestions would be fab!

One thing with John Bead is you need a Provincial Sales Tax Exemption which all business owners in Ontario have. The Canadian Indian "status card" also serves as a provincial sales tax exemption. That is how most "Nish" without regestered businesses get their supplies, so ask one of your buds for their customers number. This place is really not that hard to find from Highway 401. (the major Highway in Ont.)

I'll respond again in a bit, juss gotta get some more info! and don't worry I'l try to include some GOOD directions, as it is impossible for this ndn to get lost!!!!!!!!!!jokez.
