I was around just enough to witness the non-indian dance contest, the winner actually did a good job and she wasn't bad looking either. |

we went last night but got really lucky and found a very CLOSE parking spot...i guess bcuz we got there during dinner break and nothing was happening. Yes, the arena was itty bitty..the whole area felt crowded and I couldn't hear a darn thing the MC was saying..the sound was not good. There seemed to be lots of speakers, but i couldn't make out half of what was being said.
We were there for gourd dance..all 25 minutes of it and then Grand Entry, a couple of contests and HOURS of specials. The only song i heard real clear was happy birthday to the pow wow coordinator...the rest of the music and stuff was just garbled. It was a lot of wasted time because they could have contested the adults in the nice cool weather instead of doing it during the afternoon today. I heard some grumbles from the Adult men dancers about this. Imagine all those spectators who paid to get in and then didn't get to see anything but specials/giveaways and non-indian dance contests! That was really embarrassing by the way...I can't believe P.Jackson gets away w/ this spectacle year after year. |

ANyway, after all the complaints I still had fun......It was good to sing with a full crew again......drum contest winners were 1st-Blu Thunder (Fu*k yeah bros!!!), 2nd-Thunderhouse, and YB style......didn't pay any attention to anything else.....I didn't think it was that hot as everyone is making it out to be.....weak!!!..LOL!!!....anyway, lets hear the rest of the whining..........LOL!!!

No Whining
There's no doubt that some people were having a good time. It just wasn't my kind of pow-wow, but in AZ. they rarely are. It was definitely great to see some people that I haven't seen in YEARS and yes, Rocky Park was in rare form. Some of the other singing was good but you had to be right on top of it to hear it. I'm glad that some folks had a good time!

Skybird- the comment about whining was not directed to you personally, my case in point is this....when a powwow is over, the first thing everyone does is complain about what should have, could have or not have happened....why can't someone jar the forum a little and share something good about their weekend experience? I, for one, enjoyed it very much, yes I have some reservations about some things, but the fun I had overshadowed all that....and thank you for your compliment........

I will make several good points afterwards so I can be in balance: I agree with my bro 50 that this particular powwow brought a lot of people together that you normally don't get elsewhere in AZ. It was good to see many relatives in one spot at one time. It gave me a chance to hand out flyers for future powwows without having to hit three or four powwows. The best feature about this event is that it is right off of I-17 which connects with I-40 and I-10. It also has a climate that can be hot during the day and cool in the evenings. One just has to be prepared for both ends. The pavilion, however awkward it is, has real grass. At least there was no dirt or dust getting into your eyes. There is a large outdoor arena with a good-sized parking area west of I-17 by the river. There is an arbor that goes all the way around, but there is dirt everywhere and I know people would choose the pavilion over that arena. Skybird and 50, keep arockin! |

We had a good time... although we only went fri and sat evenings. Parking wasn't too bad, we were able to grab a space up top close by. The weather was cooler than I expected at night. I remember one year it was cool, but muggy humid. I didnt notice any humidity at all. My son won the tiny tot special! And I dunno how.. but we managed to fit his new bike in the trunk! LOL
The only thing I didnt like was the long line for food. We ended up taking our kids into the casino for a late dinner. Do they limit the number of food vendors? And then they ended up running out of food. Thanks TTechno for the flyers! Are you providing sound at all the events you were handing out flyers for? I sent my daughter down to you when I saw you handing them out. I told her to call you "TECHNO".. but I think she chickened out! LOL |

Give him a high-5 for me! Thats soooo awesome!!! I bet he was just excited huh?? Thats too cool!! I think the only ones that are appreciative on winning or earning a dollar or two these days at pws are the lil kids like the tiny tots, because they dont know the value of money yet and with just getting a dollar they are all YEE HAW about it! Am I right?? LOL Unlike ADULTS...they get all pissy about saying they got jipped!! LMAO!

Thanks Char! Yep.. he was excited. He kept running around the arena. LOL He was just excited to dance. All evening he was wanting to dance...but they were doing other specials and then a non-indian dance off... or something like that. I had to keep him close by and let him dance near where we were sitting. LOL
But its a big bike... he'll grow into it. All day yesterday he was asking for one of us to push him around. he's all.. "mom, push me! Its fun" LOL And its funny when he gets his dollar.. he usually gives it to his dad... or says... he's going to "save it." LOL And whether its five dollars... or one dollar... you're right, he doesnt care... he's just excited he's out there dancing. |
