What are you using as the criteria. Number of people attending the powwows or actual number of powwows in a state or province. From what I have read on here since I joined a few months ago, sounds like a lot of good powwows in Arizona and Oklahoma territories. A huge one in Ontairo, Conneticut and in New Mexico. Alot of really big name drums come from the Prairie provinces. Couple of big Powwows in the Northwest. Dude lots to choose from.

Nope, no way is Cali the pow wow capital of the indian world. Do they have over 500 teepees like Crow Fair? LOL
they may be the casino or cash pow wow capital since they dish out alot of contest money to draw in the competition dancers, but those dancers all go home to their home celebrations on the reservations or areas where they are from. I have only been out there 3 times and I have mostly seen Okies, Navajos, and dancers from the north, very seldom have I seen the host tribe dance. Except at Indio when they did the bird singing, now that was awesome. But the Cali pow wows mostly cater to contest dancers and singers to draw in the natives. LOL |

Sorry Hokahey,
That distinction goes to Oklahoma. The reason for this is there is a rich history of 67 diverse tribes that came to what was then Indian Territory. "Intertribal powwow dances" resulted from these exchanges in culture and customs. Dances such as the Men's Fancy Dance, Straight Dance, Women's Southern Cloth and Buckskin, the Gourd Dance and 49 originated in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Today in Oklahoma there are five (5) identifiable powwow circuits, meaning you will see the same faces week in-week out, supporting the dances in their areas. There are also AT LEAST four (4) powwows in the state of Oklahoma EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND of the year! Oklahoma has the second largest population, behind California. However there are enough powwow Indians in Oklahoma to make each powwow successful. During the week of the 4th of July, there are 7 celebrations with powwow dancing in the state. Many top dancers have intermarried with beautiful Oklahoma Indians and now call Oklahoma "home." _____ I work for the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and I approve this message!! Ayeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee*

Whome is correct in claiming Oklahoma and I'd like to say that South Dakota should be the second best powwow state. Only because I'm from South Dakota. As for Southern California, they do have good powwows but as Sslate said. Mostly Okies, Navajos and the traveling Northern Plains dancers that make up the bulk of participants. Northern California on the otherhand is a mystery to me. Too weird for my blood.

I have to agree wit quicksilverwade sayin' that No.Cal pow-wows are wierd.I've been to some of them, and they are completly strange.Although some pow-wows aren't that bad, like Livermore pow-wow is pretty cool, but that's about it.

Well what do expect.....especially in N/ cal ..no one really does PW's cuz it's PW are not native to Cali....up north it's really old school traditions. doing the what's native to cali, and unless your are from a tribe up here you would not be invited to come to some of the dance or ceramonies. When they do have PW it's cuz they are trying to do the PW thing just to get invloved with other ndns. And most of the peeps putting them on are just not familiar with PW's. TEH livermore PW is nto put on by a host tribe ...infact many of The PW's in cali are not put on by a tribe (unless the casino tribe). Most are put on by colleges or urban ndn groups who came out to cali on the relocation program...and are from all kids of diffrent tribes not native to cali. Even to the casino cali ndn's PW are not native...but the have the money to do it and it brings out good contest dancing. but hey I would take a Big time, brush dance, round house, strawberry fesival ect..over a pow wow any time. At least at our trible dances you get no venders, no food booths, no white folks....just good peeps, with traditional food........yummy yummy.

ndnkidz5, Thank you for sharing this. I am really proud of the Northern Cali tribes for remaining close to their own traditional ways and not really concerning themselves with exchanging their ways for intertribal powwow ways.\ Keeping outside influences outside of their cultures doesn't seem to be the norm anymore. There has been a lot of talk on this forum about tribes adopting the powwow and forsaking their own tribal ways for this "modern tradition" we now call - Powwow.
