The Winds of the Northwest Powwow is generally the third weekend of June at a field adjacent to the WA-HE-LUT INDIAN SCHOOL, at the Franks Landing Indian Community next to I-5 between Olympia, Washington and Fort Lewis. Nearby (up the Nisqually River Valley) is the Nisqually (Squalli-Absh) Indian Tribe's reservation. "Skunkie" Scabbyrobe (of the Blacklodge Singers) is the school's cultural advisor and is coordinating this year's powwow.
This powwow offers free camping adjacent to the school and the powwow area, and swimming in the Nisqually River. While there are often sponsored feeds, bring money for food. There are usually alot of good food vendors, too. Last year, although it was slightly overcast, it was unusually hot and humid so always remember to bring lots of drinking water, especially if you plan to dance. This will also be the same weekend as the Delta Park Powwow, 100 miles south in Portland, Oregon. On a side note, the sound system is one of the best you will hear at a powwow, provided by Brian Pillsbury, dba Doughboy Productions (professional DJ service in the Olympia area). Brian's son, Christian, is planning to be brought out as a fancy dancer at this year's powwow. Christian also sings with my youth drum, the High Rock Singers, whose singers are primarily from Melvin Blacketer's "Midnight Echo" drum group of past years. Midnight Echo will also regroup occasionally whenever we have a second drum. Visit http://nwpowwow.com/cgi-bin/eventcal/calendar.pl?month=6 to view June powwows for our region.

Wait, but K.T. your still going to DayBreak star right? It's going on the same time as Julyamsh :( we had to do a little vote in the family, and we're going to DayBreak star yee!! But like the thing is, we live like 15 mins away from DayBreak star and like a whole DAY awaaaaay from Julyamsh. At Delta Park we always go and i dont dance, and since our vendor space was so far away from the powwow i didnt see like 1 dancer and we couldnt even hear the powwow music! i never went to see what was happening, because it was like, all under a tent...like muckleshoot or salmon homecoming...hopefully ill see you in JUNE we got so many powwows going on in june!! theres Sauk Suiattle, Tulalip, and something else...

I like this powwow. One of the best in WA state for the last few years.
Julyamsh vs. Daybreak star. That's a tough one. I had my mind all set to go to Julyamsh, but now i'm in the same boat as ndnangel. |
