I don't understand

Okay I noticed @ two powwows now "Tobacco Free" and "S.W.A.T." (Saponi Warriors Against Tobacco). Do ppl understand what the meaning of tobacco is for us and what is was used for? (sarcasticly speaking) I don't get it. If you mean cigarettes and cigars...then say cigarettes and cigars. Saying "tobacco free" isn't right.

Tobacco Free Event

Hi Taani,

Thanks for your input in reference to Tobacco Free Pow-wows/ Events. You are correct about the relationship between tobacco and our families -- We honor the healing and traditional purposes of tobacco, but we do not honor commercial use. During the pow-wow our Lumbee Teen Tobacco Advocates will demonstrate the topical healing purposes of tobacco among our people. Tours will be offered for students & adults all 3 days.
I recognize your concern and understand that the use of "Tobacco Free" means just that. I am funded by a grant that requires me as a coordinator to use the phrase "Tobacco Free".
Signage will be placed around the drum arbor to allow the use of TRADITIONAL TOBACCO but prohibit commerical use.
The truth is I can't stop anyone from smoking or chewing but it would be nice to honor the request of our young people....

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I hope to see you all at the pow-wow.

Hey Lumbee Pride,

I completely understand the term 'tobacco free'. I knew it meant commercial but it just sounds funny at a native event. I just hope others understand the term as well.

I also understand, now, that you needed to use certain words to honor the grant received. :)

Unfortunately, we will be unable to attend the event as it is too far, for now, to go. Hope everyone has a great time.

Well, I'm in for this pow-wow. Gonna make the drive down there this time. I flew to Hollister but decided against flying this time around. I wanna take my time getting back instead of having to pack up and hurry to the airport. Besides if I take my Hummer I'm less likely to get stuck in the mud again!...lol I figure I take precautions this time...lol Hope to see everyone there and get to talk more with all of the friendly people I met in Hollister. Have a safe trip everyone!
