I've been associated with several Trick Song Dance Contests. The only ones I've been a part of were "tap out" until the Champion stands alone. We'll sponsor one this weekend @ the University of Wyoming..........still in the planning stages. It's advertised as "winner take all". However, we're think'n 'bout have'n 1 male winnner and 1 female or 1 winner for grass/jingle, 1 winner, men & women traditional and one winner for men & women Fancy. Thoughtful replies appreciated! Thanx! Hope to see you there!!

Just out of curiousity how are you gonna deal with the ones that over step but don't walk off or anything?
Another thing.. I've heard my hubby talk about drums actually singing real trick songs and then there are the ones that sing any song (like an intertribal) and add their own stops when they have those type of contests. How are you going to do it? Last edited by 49in_ndn; 03-30-2005 at 02:30 PM. Reason: To add to it |

That's pretty much what this thread is all about......... * when dancers are tapped out it's out there in the open........ no hiding, which judge did what. *however... in the early stages when there are more dancers missed stops may go unnoticed. * to level the dance floor .....so to speak... we were thinking about using ballots instead. Rather than tapping dancers out, we would just give them a black mark or strike each time they missed. Then the dancer with the fewest black marks would win. * With the strike system we would have to make sure an equal number of judges are watching each dancer..... for obvious reasons. * we might juss tap 'em out. * it would be nice if dancers were honest and just walked off.....we all know that doesn't always happen. More comments please.

Probably the best way to handle it would be to give each dancer a small ankle bracelet similiar to what Martha Stewart is currently sporting. Then, when they overstep, just give them a little juice.
Seriously though, tapping seems to be the best. I've contested in many of these and judged quite a few as well, and the best way is to get a fair amount of judges who are knowledgeable to help be the tappers.

Furious,
I used to go to BYU back in da' day. At all the powwows in the area they had trick dance contests that I would enter. There was an old man named Jr. Colby (sp?), from Ft. Hall, who won every single trick dance contest. He danced on one foot. His right foot stayed on the ground and his left foot went up and down to the beat of the drum. No matter when the drum stopped his left foot would stop. *L sometimes up, sometimes down. Is Jr. still alive? also. . . Are you the one that dances, or used to fancy dance, with the super long flag tape on your whip sticks?

I seen this one guy, a grass dancer kneel down on one knee and put his other leg out and just moved his head a shoulders. At first it looked cool cause everyone thought he was really gonna get low then get up and start jammin out but he never got up..lol he just stayed there on his knee through the whole song. Everyone kept yelling for him to get up and everyone was cheering and what not but he stayed down. He didn't win the contest... lol

I have to agree that tapping out will be the best and most fair way to conduct this type of contest. The whole idea of a trick song contest is to see if the dancers stop on time. Personally I like this idea......the dancers are not compeating against each other, but against the drum.
My family will be sponsoring a trick song contest at Southern California Indian Center's 37th annual Pow Wow at Los Angeles Fairplex in Pomona (AKA Orange County) July 29, 30 & 31, 2005. But I added a little twist.......back to back trick songs. It will kind of be a Iron man trick song contest. It will be open to all adults and winner take all. But the prize may change as the time gets closer. We planned on "tapping out" dancers or letting them walk off until there is one left. Let us know how it went. |
