Scottsdale All Indian Days Powwow
I remember that one! Brings back a few memories....just a few.
Your right, that was a big powwow, bigger than any powwow in AZ to-date. Wow, thanks for reminding me. |

You are right the Powwow hasn't kept up. But I mean kept up with other big powwows. The way the money thing works for NNF is: the "Fair Office" has a budget from which they allocate funds to run the various events during the Fair. The powwow has been receiving between $12,000 - $25,000 the last 4-5 years. It is the Powwow Committee's (all volunteers) responsibility to raise any additional funds needed. (Sky City, Ignatio, and Towoc all usually advertise $50,000.) The way the Fair Office and Navajo Nation Resources Committee see it, the powwow doesn't generate money, so putting more money in it is a waste. The Rodeo, Concerts, and Carnival all generate revenue, supposedly enough to cover their cost. I know people don't want to think money drives the powwow, but it does. Not only do Casino funded powwows get to pay out big, but they don't have to charge admission and can even sometimes have free food for dancers and singers. I was the powwow coordinator last year and will be again this year. I appreciate any suggestions you want to pm to make NNF what it use to be. There are a lot of things about the powwow that I control and ALOT of things I don't control. For example, I do not control, parking, traffic, Fair Admission, or dust coming from the Rodeo. But my committee is working hard to make each year a better powwow than last year. Last edited by kiyaanii mom; 04-20-2005 at 07:25 PM. |

The Morning Star Powwow fizzled out after it was held at Tempe Diablo Stadium (spring training home of the Angels). The other one that had a nice start was the Powwow associated with the Winter Classic Championship Rodeo. The rodeo was held at VMC the first year, then at West World (Horse World) along with the powwow... but that got dropped out as well. Maybe the VMC is not a good starting point, eh? |

What about the powwows at the Triple C in Chinle???
I enjoy going to the powwows at the Chinle Community Center. However, after they meet "Maximum Capacity", the powwow gets stale. And I don't just mean the smell.
But, they do host some tight powwows. Dine' College powwow is alright. I love tha arena only because it looks exactly like where Guns N' Roses shot the 'Sweet Child O' Mine video. HOWEVER, the echo that comes from the beat bouncing off the dome is only good for Slash, not your average Drum Pounders. |

Yeah, sound is bad at DC. BTW, has there ever been a powwow held at the new Ganado Pavilion yet? Come on Jay, do something. Last edited by Ta'neeszahnii Techno; 05-03-2005 at 11:49 AM. |

thanks for reviving this thread, Grizz. This one's pretty cool. ASU 2002 was my first, so that pww will always be special. Yeah, it's cramped but I almost always cruise solo so all I have to do is find a spot to hang every once in a while. These days, I'm usually hangin' with Snoop's twin and his family. Most of the time, though, I'm just walking laps around the grounds, diggin' on the scene. The solo vendor thing blows too, though. That's why I like the rez pow wows. Lots of variety in the eats dept. RME is real cool too (I'm still blown away by the spotlight dances in 2003) but Orme Dam gets my vote as #1. Last one in the PHX area for the fall season, everyone's in a good mood. Lots of food vendors (big plus). One of the best bowls of mutton stew I ever ate was there. MCT was real decent this year too.
