I have never been to a PowWow where the dancers received money for their dance. I also never plan on going to one. My clan family and I Dance for The People Springdeer.

Thanks for judging those of us who enjoy hitting a contest pow wow once in awhile. Most of us who do also hit all the community and traditional dances too.

Anyhoo, looks like a good pow wow - might be worth the drive up there.

But, you chose to post this in a thread about a major contest pow wow. We all know what you said and what your point was. You were called on it, and now you're trying to backtrack. Do you by any chance serve on a Tribal Council?

I truely belive that dancing for the people is one of the most sacred things that an individual can do. Taking money for it. I can not even fathom that.
No I am not a Tribal Leader. I just strongly believe in the spirituality of the Red Road. I do not want or deserve money for expressing my spirituality. Nor for dancing prayers.

Do everyone regard a powwow as "being good" if it has the money to pay out? Or if it don't have the money to pay out, are they "not a good" powwow?

It seems as though a good powwow is one that has the money to pay out thousands. But then again, that is where the good competition is. I guess you could look at it from different viewpoints.

What do you all think? cuz I just got done reading some posts on some "good" powwows but then the dancers had to wait for their moneys so it became a just "so so" powwow.

Well, I'm glad that you're 100% traditional and all and above all the rest of us who lower ourselves to enjoy a good money-grubbing contest dance once in awhile. Like I said before, most of the dancers who frequent the bigger contest money dances also attend their local community pow wows. I know I do.

Spirituality...Red Road...dancing prayers...Aho...do I see a pattern here?

Exactly. I think if you choose to follow that particular "Red Road" and are that spiritual, then you keep that to yourself and don't put it into this context of conversation. I think if we all wanted to state our spirituality and our tribal history(clans,dances,songs,ceremonies) it may exceed yours. But we don't post that because it is personal and private and something we keep to ourselves, amongst ourselves.
When talking contest powwow, I see alot of sundancers, peyote people, clan leaders, spiritual leaders who participate for the sake of enjoyment. Native americans since time began have always been competitive, who could throw the farthest, run the fastest, count the most coup, etc.etc. So, it is in our blood to be the best at whatever we choose to do, dance, sing, work and be proud of it. the stakes have just changed over time, the prize is now money.LOL

It's always white people or natives that have just recently "found their culture" that make dumb comments like wyldwolf. The same people that make things up as they go along. So traditional and holy yet they find the time to judge others.

Well jee wilikers I thought I had being doing this all my life. As for making up stuff as I go along....I am honored to be the halfside of a pipecarrier. With him around I how can I make things up as I go along? My Father is Sunbear a cherokee healer and teacher, his half side works for the people and most importantly for the people.
You need to learn the the differances between a personal statement and judging folk. Dance all you want for money if that is your choice. Dang. Don't be slamming me for being me.
