Most people that go to Sells, have to camp. Its too far to drive back and forth to Tucson. People sleep in their cars, their trucks, their vans and tents. As far as I know there aren't showers or anything available, and tents just get put up out by the parking. It's all pretty informal, the area is really rural, so bring your food and comforts of home because there aren't many places to buy what you forget. Have fun!

Actually......I stayed in Tucson last year during Sells Powwow....it was WAY too cold to sleep there. Yes folks...in fact.......it DOES get cold there. I think it was like 60 or something during the day, but, as soon as the sun starts setting....it gets wickedly cold!
Most everyone usually just heads back to Tucson or finds some folks there in Sells that they can stay with. .....ask the Host Southern drum's head singer....Ryan! aye!! Naw...Ryan's cool....he offered to put me up last year...but, I already had a place to crash in Tucson. I found a place over on Tanque Verde, it was approximately 2 hour from there to Sells I believe. I just headed south from Tanque Verde to Ajo Way and headed on out West from there.....it's not all that bad driving from there back and forth. Although, the road was very narrow....but, luckily, traffic wasn't bad. I don't know that they're still doing work on I-17....but, check ahead of time, last time there we're all these funky lane changes and some are like different directions between certain hours or one way during others. Oh yeah...watch out for the Immigration folks and try not to act all suspicious! aye! Course.......I paid like $150 a night for my hotel room, but, it was pretty darn sweet!! Because of the annual Tucson Gem and Mineral show.....held every February I believe, thru like March or something..........EVERY HOTEL ROOM in Tucson is booked SOLID!!!....months in advance. Except for the REALLY expensive places...hence, my paying $150 a night for a room. A good thing though is this. You have vendors selling beads and other indian stuff there at hte same time all over Tucson......so, be sure to pick up a copy of the Arizona Daily Star and see where the beads are to be had, and be sure to see if they sell to the general public, as some places only are open to dealers. You can find some real finds there, really big savings on beads, needles, thread, leather, fur, etc....you name it, there's probably someone selling it there in Tucson during the Gem and Mineral show. There's also usually some travelling exhibits in town featuring indian stuff, or some dealers typically have things on display or for sale.....like beadwork sets and such, or will buy beadwork from Natives. It's a good thing to know if you run short on cash and need sell something quick to make some cash. Also, there's a Mc Donalds, Carl's Jr, Texaco, Conoco, Chevron, Safeway Supermarket, Walgreens Drug Store, and Albertsons all out on Ajo Way, after you cross the Interstate.....good to know if you need to grab something last minute. On Tanque Verde, there's a Safeway, a Target, several fast food joints, a bar or two, a good sushi place, another that specializes in Mongolian BBQ.....and your usual gas stops and such. Oh yeah! There's also a Denny's not far from Tanque Verde too, on your way out to Ajo Way......so, you can catch some grub there late or early in the AM. A bit of info on the Gem Mineral, bead show thingy. Then be sure to check this place out...... www.beadshow.com Should be some helpful info there. Another on Tucson Area Restaurants Also, ask your hotel/motel if they can supply you with a City of Tucson map. Tucson is VERY easy to get around in. I believe the Mall is over on North Oracle Road.....easy to spot and easy to find. Tucson Mall Hope that helps some....

Yes, it gets cold there at night. The lows right now are in the mid 30's. Some people don't want to or can't afford to spend $150 a night plus the cost of gas to drive back and forth. So camping, whether in a van or a tent or truck is fine. This will be my 6th year going to the Tohono O'odham fair and my first year having to drive back to Tucson. Granted, it's only a 60 mile drive, the road is only 2 lanes, it's dark AND there's that pesky border patrol issue. They're everywhere down there, on quads, buses, in helicopters, etc. I've never been on the 86 (road between Tucson and Sells) when I didn't get nearly run down by Customs/Border patrol agents rushing through the desert.
Yes, folks you too will get to see Homeland Security in action!! The fair part is always fun though w/ food (red chili, yum), rides, booths and concerts. About four years ago COOLIO was the main event on Saturday night. |

Yeah.....$150 was a bit steep.....but, I had to pay it. I'm a wimp.....I don't do the camping thing for no one. I'd rather drive two hours or more to a powwow and sleep in a hotel where I can shower and I know I'm not gonna freeze my arse off. I had enough of that in college on geology field trips.....I promised myself back then I'd never do it again.
...anyway. Yup...the fair's an okay kinda event. Hell....now I'm thinkin' of goin again. I've got family in Tucson, but, I hate staying with them, plus, their place is kinda small. I actually didn't have any problems or run in's with the Border Patrol down there. They we're relatively out of the way and didn't really get on the road too much. I know they did pull over a couple of vehicles while I was on the road, and then you have those elevated lookout towers on the backs of trucks....kinda like a cherry picker with blacked out windows added on. I figured it was probably just a video camera in there, as it would be entirely too hot for ANYONE to sit up there in that small confined space for too long. Anyhoo.....
