Definately duct tape the blankets down, because people WILL move it.

On the website it says that MIW tickets are $12.50 each.

I also wanted to know if the weekend passes include the MIW Pageant, or do you have to pay separate?

Thanks guys for all the replies. We are close to being set I guess - got plane tickets, hotels and a rental car lined up. Now, just have to get the event tickets and stock up on some duct tape :)

What is the Midnite Rodeo?

This GON virgin can't wait! I haven't ever been to NM before...only place in the Southwest I've been was Phoenix.

How much does it cost to register for dance contest? Or is that included with your cost of admission?

Got a good tip! Check the dates before you book flights and hotel! I just realized this morning (right before I booked my flight) that it's not on the 3rd weekend in April but on April 28! Had to call and change my hotel!

Isn't it usuallly on the 3rd weekend?

Best hotel, closest hotel.

For those who have been before can you give some ideas on best hotels and the closest one to the powwow?

Singerdad, Sure glad to hear you and Helen are going.
Mom and I are trying to see if we can swing this on.

I had a great time in at the Cherokee youth powwow.
You'all did great.

Unhappy GON Tips

Well since y'all didn't heed Techno's advice..which was also mine (stay home!!) here are some tips: Imagine the most crowded, HOT, inconvenient place you could possibly have a pow-wow, then plan from there. Only half the seats in the place are seats w/ backs on them, the rest are benches. You must bring all your own creature comforts AND be willing to haul them up and down many stairs. The parking is awful, unless you're willing to be at the PIT the entire time-very early in the am until very late at night, you will end up parking across the street, blocks away from the place.

Now, for the pow-wow itself...only about half the drums can set up at a time-due to major space issues on the dance floor. All the same dancers will be there and all the same dancers will win. And all the same drums will win also. There's no big surprises at this one. It's really more like a show, than it is a pow-wow, which is unfortunate.

There are alot of vendors which is kind of nice because you don't get to see some of that stuff everyday..but the food leaves a lot to be desired. Frybread, roasted corn, New mexican food, snack bar food, hamburgers, etc.

The schedule is a little strange also...the PIT opens to the public on Friday morning, so if you want good seats be there at 10am!! Grand entry is at noon and 7pm on Friday and on Saturday it's at noon and 7pm, but the Saturday night session doesn't end until the pow-wow is over...like at 3 or 4 am in the morning. then the pow-wow is over..there's nothing on Sunday. Yes, it's a lot of fuss for a 2 day pow-wow.
