Tucson New Year's Powwow
I've been hearing about some New Year's contest powwow in Tucson with big prize money... Is this true? If so, any info?? What's the scoop or is this just nasty rumor? Some folks I know are planning to travel quite a ways for it -- I don't know anything about it though... you?? :dontknow:

Indians I know in Tucson, said it is a small powwow. It seems that the first contest powwow they had - DID NOT deliver what was advertised! HHHHHmmmmmm?
That's the quickest way to kill a powwow's reputation.

If this is the same powwow I stopped by last year... hrm... wasn't impressed. I have a hard time believing the prize money -- I need to do some more investigating and see who was saying what and find out where they got their info from. Keep your ears to the ground and let me know if y'all hear anything

Hello * *Happy New Year* I have attended the PowWow in Tucson for the last 6 years. I am planning on attending it again this year. It feels nice to know we are bringing in the New Year in a Positive way. I have seen much talent when it comes to the dancers, singers, drumers. Have not heard anything negative. Know one of the vendor's and they have continued to come for the last few years. I started going to this when Desert Thunder was there in 2000, that was really nice. Many of the same people are here every year since to bring in the New Year with us, along with many more. Desert Thunder will be coming here the end of 2007 to bring in 2008. I think these powwow's are put on very well. I enjoy going every year, and I am sure there are many who feel the same as I do. Good Life Kate undefined

I tabulated this pow wow about 5 years ago or so, there was prize money..not much but the guy in charge, Fred Synder added money from the gate, like some weird amount to EVERY paid category, $211 or something so people got paid weird amounts..i.e, if prize was $50, then they got $261. There wasn't a drum contest that I can remember. I've also heard that sometimes they just do a "day money" arrangement for the dancers on this one.
I'd BEWARE of looking for real money though, I haven't heard anything positive in that direction. |
