I don't mean to be the sarcastic mean spirited type person, BUUUUUUUUUUUT, doesnt' it seem kinda weird that this pow-wow is to honor the Cathedral Lakes singers, and for more information, to contact Jay Begaye? Maybe tomorrow I will start organizing a dinner to honor myself LOL.

And all I'm doing is passing on what he sent me ... don't know who James and Ernie are. :ball1: Anyways, there are a lot of other events going on during New Year's Eve and most people already know what they're gonna be doing. :blow: |

James & Ernie poised for national spotlight
By Jan-Mikael Patterson Navajo Times CROWNPOINT - James Junes and Ernest Tsosie III are serious about one thing - being funny. The pair entertained students and community members at the Crownpoint Institute of Technology with a performance Monday that left audience members clutching their sides, wiping away tears and gasping for air. The performance attracted more than 200 people, a sign that for the Navajo comedians, it's been a very good year. Demand for the James and Ernie Comedy shows is increasing, Tsosie said. "We're just busier than ever. We've finally gone beyond the borders of the Southwest." "Our goal was to go national," he said, noting they recently did shows in Nevada, Wyoming, and California. "When we did a show in Wyoming, people said that they could relate to the humor," Junes said. "There was a lady there that told us, 'Once you've been to one reservation you've been to them all.'" Having branched out in Indian Country, they are now on the brink of mainstream American show business thanks to a breakout performance at the American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco last month. "It was the awesomest and the baddest show," grinned Tsosie. "That was a war party." In Tsosie's lexicon "war party" means "awesome." The event featured high-profile Native American performers like Tantoo Cardinal, Sunny Sky Hawk, Chris Eyre, and Michael Horse. Actor Tim Sampson applauded Tsosie and Junes for calling Wal-Mart the "true Gathering of Nations." Junes and Tsosie said they felt like rookies compared to the veteran performers who attended their show. "It was intimidating," Junes said. "We had dinner with Tantoo Cardinal and Tina Keeper." Junes recalled that the actresses were very talkative while he and Tsosie sat by and observed. "Tantoo said to us, 'You're the quietest comedians we ever met.'" "We're usually quiet and reserved but once we're on stage we just flip the switch," Tsosie said. "We go into a different mode. It's like we're putting on our game faces." "That night the crowd's response was phenomenal," Junes said. "We only had 12 minutes to show who we are and what we do." After the performance, Junes said, "We got swarmed by people. It got so bad that we had to move to the lobby." Especially touching was the praise from other Native American actors. "These are established figures in the film industry," Junes said. "We felt so small." The San Francisco performance was triumphant especially since the duo had just had a bad night. "We had a bad show before this," Tsosie said. "We came from a failure." Tsosie did not give any details but said the previous show was "painful and humiliating. If we (were) still beginning, we would've quit." Tsosie and Junes believe now that it was a test by the Creator to teach a lesson in humility. "The character of a man is not judged by how he falls but how he rises from it," Junes said. "We hit a brick wall somewhere but it's how you bounce back." The duo's talent has taken them beyond live shows and landed them roles in a film directed by Larry Blackhorse Lowe, an independent filmmaker. For Tsosie, it's a great break. "Comedy is my day job," he said. "My dream is to be an actor." Junes, on the other hand, says he will continue comedy, though he would welcome acting if it ever landed on his plate. The pair also is getting noticed by the national media, including being featured in the September/October issue of Native Peoples magazine. They've shared the stage with Canadian headliners such as bluesman George Leach and hard rocker Derek Miller. Now they are getting inquiries from Canada. In December, they'll pack their blue Wal-Mart luggage with props and head to Florida and South Dakota. Combining their comedy performances was a gamble. They took a chance in a make-or-break business and succeeded, thanks not only to talent but to the support of family and friends, Junes said. Junes' wife, Rose Junes, still handles the duo's booking duties. "Sometimes I feel bad for her because she gets tied down to the phone on most days," Junes said. "She really works hard on schedules." Junes and Tsosie also give credit to Native Stars talent agency for its support. Information: www.jamesandernie.com. |

How do Cathedral Lake Singers sound nowadaysanywazhuh. I heard them when they were in BC when Jay was singing in Keremeos. His old group now sings under Highwater and they sound really good, they are mostly his old family from when he was with a woman from there. Are in the process of releasing their first CD. Some of them Dine boys were at a powwow in Victoria, BC. They were a host drum one year, Dine Nation Jrs. They were pretty good.

Gotta ask if we are talking about the same Jay Begay. He was lead singer of a group called Cathedral Lakes in Keremeos, BC. They had a real cool sounding drum. Jay is probably 5' 6-7", slim stature. Anyway in the 90's they were host drum in BC at a lot of places. They won Kamloopa Powwow a couple of times. They had a real cool drum song that use to always get whistled or fanned. Anyway, wasn't trying to be a wiseguy, maybe we are getting mixed up, although he was from Arizona.
