Question Incorporating your tribes designs???

I was looking at our regalia for our canoe family...(contemporary and tradional salish songs/dances) and I was thinking hey I could throw on a matching cape and plumes. I think it would be pretty bad-ace to have NW coastal designs on my pow wow regalia..but on the other hand should maybe you keep them seperate...

What do yall think about tribes incorporating their designs into pow wow regalia when the tribe or nation adopted pow wow ways?

this1:

I have never seen it, but I think a shawl with the raven, killer whale or eagle design in buttons would be "cho!" I have seen plenty of the blankets. . . but never a contemporary shawl with long fringe.

Care to start a new trend?

Designs

I'm not hard core pow wow person, persay, but I think a few designes that belong to your tribe that is done in good taste would be an excellent idea. My mother is a weaver of what we call 'sash belts' and she was approached by a navajo mother that reqested two sash belts to be a part of a new grass outfit needless to say, it was a awesome sight. It was different and since, i think mom was approached three more times in different colors for the same purpose. Try it, it may turn out really nice.

Sounds pretty interesting and creative...I'd like to see it! It's nice to see dancers incorporating their tribal designs into their powwow regalia nowdays. It'll distinguish you and your pride for your tribe from the other dancers in your category who may have just a 'regular' made up design that doesn't mean anything but to look good.

Heres a picture of my first coastal dress..pretty basic, im working on a new one with leggins, mocs and a shawl :)

Babe, i agree thanks for the input.

Cheiboy, im learning how to weave. Ive made a few headbands, a purse and a belt. Probably different style from there though huh.

Whome, the button blankets are more northern than my style..they represent your family crest or clan. man thier beautiful though.

My wife has made powwow outfits for our daughter who now dances in the teen category and she has made designs of a wolf and eagle on the back of our daughter's shawl. Our daughter dances in the teens. She also has put a design on the yoke, leggings and also on her vest. It looks real cool and she has gotten numerous compliments on it. My wife is from the Haida nation. She has sold some regalia and has spent as much as 50 hours on the shawl alone.

I personally think coastal designs on a powwow outfit would definately look awesome! I've seen a fancy shawl outfit with our tribal designs and it looked unique and awesome too.

Too good for pow wows

Personally, I think coastal designs are too good to be incorporated into Pow Wow outfits...it sounds cool...but when I consider how strong some coastal cultures are...Pow Wow is Pow Wow and Potlatch is Potlatch. I don't see a lot of people into their own cultures right now...but are caught up in the uni-culture of Pow Wow...lots just pow wow and dont go to their own traditional services anymore or they don't learn their tribal ways.....if its not broke don't fix..Coastal tribes are bad azz the way they are.

You make some good points, but there are a lot of powwowers that are involved in thier traditional ceremonies. Myself, I have a lot of trouble balancing my life, but ceremonies always come first. That defines who a person is.

I would have to say that I would LOVE to see more people incorporate thier tribal designs into thier powwow outfits. It defines who you are in the arena, as well as makes you stand out from a crowd that can look the same.

So go ahead 1ndnchik and show me what you workin with!!!!

Talking

Well I just say, follow ur heart and do whatchu wanna do really. Some folks aint gonna agree, and some folks'll give you praise for showin your pride. So I think it'd be pretty kool. My sisters are half Makah and although they arent really PW goers all that much, they are artists and such so they incorporate that into everything they do.

Besides, ive seen a couple of outfits with some coastal designs and such and its all good, looks pretty kool.
