New Years Sobriety Powwow - Dec. 31 - Gallup, NM

One of several winter powwows coming up in the Window Rock/Gallup areas.

This event will be sponsored by Na'nizhoozhi Center Inc. Stay tuned for details.

I hope they get this powwow moved outta UNM Gym. The new high school can accomodate something like 10,000 people or something I think I heard someone say once.

I don't know HOW they'll top this past years powwow.

Cozad was rockin' and the place was standing room only!!!

Get their early....like sit in the parking lot REALLY, REALLY EARLY if you want to get in, then haul ALL yer stuff in and plan on staying for the whole day. I thought by gettin there by 3PM this year would afford me the luxury of a nice spot as in years past, I never had any trouble gettin in.

As this is a state/federally funded event.....NCI doesn't have to charge at the door, so it's a free event. A nice, sober alternative to partying in the new year.

Therein lies the fatal flaw. It's cool that there's no admission and all, but, dancers and drum groups get shut out because the place is so packed!!! I remember this year, Larry Cozad and his crew/family got locked out at the door when the police wouldn't let anyone else in on account of fire restrictions and such.

One complaint I had was the state cops there were real a-holes!!! I mean, they must have sent like the indian haters over to work the powwow or something. They we're rude, obnoxious, smart assey, you name it.....they we're it!!!

Any little thing, they we're up in your business and telling you what to do. I know some elderly folks just flat out got pissed at em, and they nearly got run off the school grounds for speaking their minds.....and rightly defending themselves.

A group of people complained to the mayor and I doubt he did anything, but, he did make some promises to get the thing moved to a bigger facility for this year's event....and promised to do what he could to make it bigger and better.

This even has really come a long ways. I remember being on the head staff for like their third annual.......it was a small group, not many attended, but, we had fun. I'm glad to see it's taken off and everyones taken an interest.

It's nice to see some sober alternatives to parties.

I understand the committee secured the Jr High School gym for this occasion. I'll pass on any new details as they develop.

Ditto on the "standing room only" from last year.

One more bit of information:

This will be a one-day event on December 31, 2004, extending into 2005 long enough to complete the events started in 2004.

Northern - Rio Grande
Southern - Cozad

Wonder why?

I mean, everyone there knew that Rio Grande stunk to high heaven until some guys from Tha Horses, Sun Eagle and Shadow Prey REALLY, REALLY, REALLY helped them out.

Cozad's a tough one to call. I mean, yeah, they're okay and all I guess. But, geez......after 13 years or more of listening to them sing the same songs over and over again....folks kinda get burned out on it.

They sing a mean Gourd though!!
