Powwow Trends...

What are some things that you all have noticed that have "gone out of style" in the powwow world? For one thing, the antennas that grass dancers used to wear, I only see about 2-3 people a year with those anymore. This is just an example, so lets hear some more!

wearing sun glasses while dancing used to be real popular, dont see that anymore, and a lot of fancy dancers used to wear a bandana over thier mouth like an outlaw or something lol

I haven't seen a grass dance outfit with yarn... now it's ribbions, fringe or strips of material. Then that new way of side stepping.. well it's not new but everyone is starting to do that pumping your arms movement. :blow: Umm lets see... I think simplicity of designs are going cause now everything is apliqued with designs and barely any background showing like on a fancy shawl or jingle dress... before there were some designs that didn't take up the entire dress, shirt or shawl or whatever material it is. The one thing that I thought was funny for a bit was that everyone, mostly the ladies busted out with rhinestones first (which was pretty)but when the men busted out with the rhinestones I thought that was kind of girly but now it's no biggie... :Flash

I don't see water boys any more. *L* They used to carry around a bucket of water and everyone would drink from the same spoon. Nowadays, the ADs will pass out water bottles.

Also, I don't see princesses sitting up front near the MC any longer.

There's alot of things that are different now. For one thing, fancy shawl and feather dancers don't do any footwork, they mainly run around and wave their shawls and spinners. Men's traditional dancers wear way too much fringe, feathers and face paint. Some grass and jingle dress dancers look like fancy dancers. I guess you could call it contemporary but why don't the dancers just switch categories and grassers and jinglers be fancy or grass? Traditional dancers with all that fringe and feathers who run around and sit down should just switch to grass dancing. Certain tribes dance they way they do because it is their customs and traditions. Now they are just pow wow trends and no matter what tribe they are from, some dancers are dancing certain ways because someone else is and winning with it. We used to be able to tell what tribe a dancer was from but now everyone is generic and NEON. What's with the neon on traditional dancers? It's OK on fancy, grass and jinglers but it's tacky, too. You walk into a pow wow and all you see is a sea of neon colors.

I agree with waci omani's comment "Now they are just pow wow trends and no matter what tribe they are from, some dancers are dancing certain ways because someone else is and winning with it. We used to be able to tell what tribe a dancer was from but now everyone is generic and NEON. What's with the neon on traditional dancers?" I guess a lot of the dancers are ashamed of their own tribes and prefer to dress in another tribe's style, so I'd say dressing your own tribal style has gone out of style!!

I see what yall are saying, and it makes a good point. But i do believe that the neon colors and different materials being present in outfits just goes along with an old ndn belief of borrowing ideas from one another, altering someone's original idea to make it thier own. Other stuff like adding more feathers or rhinestones is kind of like "best of both worlds"(said best by tha tribe on thier latest) For centuries, Indians have modified thier traditional items and clothes as new things become readily avaliable. Just my POV

Another thing that i have noticed is the beadwork people are wearing. Beaders have become much more artistic with designs. Its amazing! I really enjoy looking at other's work.

One thing I notice that has changed,or should I say been dropped is;staying fully dressed all the way through the powwow, example; during intertribals, dancing with no feathers or roach etc......very few do that anymore. Seams only older people that remember, what they were taught by the old people........

One thing I noticed this summer is grass dancers dancing like Fancy dancers...what happened to the graceful dancin...thats was a trend dis summer.OHH and everyone was getting that floral material from down south, even the men were wearing that material...The floral material was the bomb this year, and I SAY NEON OR BRIGHT COLORS WERE THE BEST THIS YEAR, I don't get why people just hate the bright colors, there purdy, thats all I gotta say, if you don't like them don't wear it, don't make them or don't stare down at other bright outfits dancers are wearing. If there blindin put some shades on cause the colors were hot this year, but it's good when you but a bright color with a darker color with some good designes, then it will be purdy.

The only reason I am not too on for the neons are because EVERYONE has it... even the floral material that blue, pink, neon green, black and whatever color it comes in... it seems like everyone just went shopping at the same place or something. People are not so original anymore with the neon or the floral material. At first, it was cool seeing it here and there but now no one stands out cause it's a sea of neon and rhinestones. That's just my opinion...

Well forget about this whole neon thing and floral colors....and people should just should mind there own business and worry about your own outfits and what color they are in stead of judging other peoples outfits...thats my two cents...LOL..yeah people do have the same material, but there all made in different styles....neon colors and floral material must be that good if everyone wants to use it for there gear.

When I was younger the women used to wear fur around their braids that hung down to their knees, like otter fur or rabbit fur for the girls... ha ha! that was a looong time ago! And the princesses back then used to fluff their bangs and sides up and the crown would be waaay on the back of their heads! hee hee!!! I still laugh at the pictures, too funny! And then you don't see the Snake dance or Buffalo dance anymore (southern thing?), or even two-step unless it's contest.

What about the angora on fancy feather dancers' legs? Man I remember when they used to be reeeal bushy, now they are calmed down, cut and curled all purdy. But thats some vintage stuff, those big ol leggings!

I hear what ur sayin about the neon colors-most everyone wearing em. :rainbw:This past wkend when judging I coudn't find the jingle dancer I wanted to put on the ballot cuz they there were 5 or 6 girls that all looked pretty much the same-so much neon and rhinestones! :dontknow:
For sure it's eyecatching and does look good but yeah, I too remember when everyone dressed according to their tribe. But hey with so much CASH on the line..u gotta do what u gotta do..it's all about the money now right???? chhhh!:$$$:
For us that remember earlier days we remember what it meant to dress according to where u come from, what it meant to dance w/ respect...one thing that's gone out the door (or pay window) is walking off if you overstep...but nowadays->no way, not w/ 1,000 bucks on the line!

Powwows are ever evolving-I wonder if it'll make a full circle and return to what it was before?????? nah...i doubt it.
Makes a person wonder what it'll look like in 10 years??? :34:
