Hey you know as I was growing up in the powwow circle and traveled far & near, I noticed drum hoppers, I don't think that is too cool, nothing envious if you have a great voice I guess and want to share and help out the 'few drummers', but if you belong to a group one should stay there!?

I'm innately jealous that all of you made such good points before I had a chance.

Yup, I agree that this negativity and jealousy is rampid among tribes. I have to admit, members of my own family are "Jealous," because I have achieved a level of success. They don't realize that I have this success, because of hard work and dedication. They also don't realize that they can have success, if they would just put in the same hard work and dedication.

Instead they try to bring me down to build themselves up. But a long time ago my Cheii (grandpa) said. "You are powerful and strong, and when people talk bad about you, you have to blow it in the wind. If you keep it inside you, it will make you small and weak like those people."

I was just rereading my post, and wanted to add that my Cheii's quote, doesn't sound so hokey when you hear it in Navajo.

i agree

im new to registering to this site, but yet i have visited this site before and when i saw this topic i had to register.
im thinking that there is jealousy out there and most of the time it is within families.

growing up, i felt it amoung my aunts and uncles. but it was the opposite kind of jealousy. It Wasnt because of anything "white". it was mainly because we do more native things. like dancing and crafts. plus some of my relatives are mixed bloods. even though this didnt bother me, my blood lines seemed to bother them.
i never understood why this was. it was like they were jealous that we did Native things, even though we are native, and they are too. they tried to keep us down and tried to say things like "you think your great because you dance and do crafts, but you still wear our hand me down "american" clothes."

I had to post this because so many people think that it has something to do with acting "white" or something.
It was the opposite for my family growing up, people were jealous because we didnt want to be anything but what most of us on this website are.

along the same lines

i also wanted to write that its not just when i was a kid. it still happens.
if i wear my native jewelry to work or if i even bring up native american topics that are truly important topics, then some of my relatives and others get very jealous.

Yet this jealousy is learned behavior. its learned because before colonization it didnt happen. after Natives were forced onto reservations they were also forced to learn different ways of life. different languages, and different ways of survival.
so those that are jealous are truly the ones that are not acting native.

Nothing hokey about it. Good words are good words.

Jealousy on any level is just sad....when we look at anyone and think anything negative against them, we need to really look at our own lives. Especially with our Native families...it does exist, but it is just so unfortunate.

So let's make a change.

When WE feel ourselves feeling anything negative against our own folks, let's try to think of something positive..there has got to be something...I know in some cases....but this is a good habit that we can begin - and it is contagious.

Some folks no matter what we do are just going to be miserable - we all know these folks exist - just pray for them to have inner peace and stop stealing everyone else's joy. :)

Dang all that is so true. At the same time it pisses me off that our own people can be like that. I mean in my neighborhood it can be bad. The thing I dont get or I should understand, how can they complain, b*tch, cry and say the its the white peoples fault or keeping them down when they want everything handed/given to them . Or want it to be easy. Sheesh life is never easy. but mind you that these are the same people who tear down the own native people in the the community who try to do good or go against the drug dealing and all the other hateful stuff. I dunno maybe I am just sick of living here. lol
