SingerD: Okay *L This is kinda' making sense. It's kinda' like one rotten apple making it bad for all the rest of the apples? Back to answering the posts. . . But did the Blackfoot really invent the grass dance? Do Anishinabe really sponsor "girls" into their jingle dress societies or are these societies only for Anishinabe elders? Do "history books" really tell the Indian side of the story? Does that mean that all things written by historians about Indian people and their culture are true?

I actually heard the comment from more than one Ponca. There were several in NC a couple of years ago. But I think they're the types who make non-friends on the circuit and soon aren't welcome anywhere. The other guy who said it has been quiet for awhile. I think he found out other people didn't appreciate hearing stuff like that. Actually, I don't know if I've ever met more Poncas than those who made bad impressions, so I would like to meet some other Poncas who can give me a good impression! Maybe, like my Comanche friend said, I just met the Poncas who couldn't go back to Oklahoma! I don't know...
Am I making sense yet? |

DonnaD: You need to go to Ponca powwow this weekend! Lot's of Poncas will be there. Tell one of them of your experiences and that you want to meet one of them that can give you a good impression.

An excellent idea. I shall have to follow up and try to find some Ponca friends to get rid of the impression left by the bad guys.
btw, I'm not a princess, but I think I was in a past life!!! I dance exhibitions for non-natives. We once had a couple of school teachers from New York tell us that they thought all Indians were dead! That's the kind of thing the dance troupes have to deal with. Because the kids may be learning alot, but it's the adults who really need the instruction! |

Mines bigger than yours......Ha Ha Ha. I don't recall ever discussing the invention of the lightbuld when I needed one. Same with the invention of the first automobile. You just hop in and drive, (hopefully it belongs to you) and take care of your business. Yet don't we tear each other apart over minor things? There are so many other issues we can be truely constructive about, yet we can't seem to play together very well. I understand that there are various dances, (straight, chicken, fancy, etc.) but I just dance to the drum. It's almost like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg. anyway thats 4 cents worth now. Also it's true, many people think indns are gone and are surprised to meet one in person. They think we all live in tee pees and run around with war paint looking for someone to scalp. We have a wounderful rich diverse culture taht belongs to all of us no mater what tribe or dance you do. At pachanga I saw an Apache dancing wearing Apache regalia. At Northern Arizona University saw a Navajo warrior who had a lionskin cap and shield. Boy was I impressed. All tribes bring something to the table and the Pow wows keep evolving just as we as natives adapt and continually re-invent ourselves. Who are the real winners here? I think we all are.
