Whatever happened to the good pow-wows that allows someone to blow an eagle whistle? There is enough time allotted for specials , I think they should give some leeway for an eagle whistle or two. I have good memories and good feelings whenever an eagle whistle is blown. I just miss it, how about you?

Depends on where you're pow wowing at will make all the difference in the world.
Here on the East Coast, they are pretty popular. I don't know why. My assumption is that some people may just think its cool..."Hey, look at what I got...lemme blow it one good time so I can be seen." I'm not saying this is whats going on. But, from my experiences, some people are a little more tolerable of them than others. I think the biggest thing is that some of the Elders who have that right and are carriers themselves are cautious of people "ABUSING" the whistle. Which, I can totally understand and agree with them. So, to answer your question, my guess is that people are more conservative when it comes to using whistles. That or, teachings may have become stricter or are stricter than what you grew up with. I will say this....find you some pretty knowledgeable people on this discussion board. Shoot them some PM's. And tiptoe lightly. If you read through some of the archives, you'll run across some topics on whistles. Look there and you'll understand my previous post. If you're looking for someone to discuss this issue further, I'm certainly not one b/c I'm not a carrier. Try the moderators for this forum here first. I think they can probably guide you a little better than I can... Hope this gets you going in the direction you're looking to go LSS

As far as your question goes.. depends on the area. Alot of the powwows I go to the eagle bone whistle is still used. That would be Chicago area, Wisconsin, Pine Ridge and the like.

Leitka,
Sorry if I came across harshly...not my intention. Only tryin' to say what Mato said...that topic really raises some Holly Stink around here and I just wanted you to be prepaired for what may come your way. Trust me....its not fun getting blasted when you're genuine about a simple question.

Thank you to everyone that responded; I do appreciate it and have a better understanding. I have only been a member for just a short time; and did pick up the sarcasm and do not take it personally. I will check the archives; again thanks to all of you with your knowledge, patience and understanding.

Eagle Whistles
I actually miss that too. Blowing whistles on drums was always a gesture that an individual appreciated the singing taking place. It's a sign of happiness. I don't know why that doesn't take place more often. I remember when whistle-blowers would receive money as well as the singers from the committee.
I guess there was a time when everybody and their mama blew whistles (or placed fans), and it became overkill. I think now people are becoming more aware of when and who would perform that gesture. Most times people are very discretionary about themselves to know whether they should do it or not. If I'm at a pow-wow and I like the drums, it's good to hear a whistle blown on it. But the people that do it because they want attention, I see dancers kinda just ignore what they're doing and dance on by. If you got the "right" (whatever that may be) I say BLOW! |

I myself am a Eagle whistle carrier and was given that right. However, do I blow it all the time at every powwow that I go to? No way. There has to be a respect for that whistle and the right to carry it.
I do agree, that, nothing gets my blood pumping and my heart raising more than to hear that whistle blown on a really good song. It just sends chills up and down my body when I hear it. But, some people do abuse the right and privilege of carrying that whistle. I was taught that you have to be so careful with the whistle because it can be taken away from you. I shared this with an individual who was abusing the whistle by not blowing it in the right way. I thought that there would be some type of argument but there wasn't. He understood and from that point on began to do it right. I say, if it is a good song and you are feeling good about it, then blow it. If something doesn't feel right, then put it away for another time.

Sometimes if a dancer feels as if a whistle has been "over-killed"....he or she will dance on about their buisness...OR...exit the Circle.
