Using the Word REGALIA
nothing drives me more crazy than to hear the word regalia used... I hear a lot of complaining about "white people" how they look how they dance etc...well I hear the word regalia used by almost everyone what happened to good ol dance clothes...regalia I am not sure of its origin but it was definately white people it appears in the catholic dictionary meaning royalty or crown jewels, something of kings and emperors, etc... it also means fine or decorative clothing and I am sure it has a lot more meanings I think I even read something about a cigar... I just had to get that out there and to find where it originated on the circuit what everyone else thinks about the word...and just proves how fast a trend starts and spreads like wild fire...thats all I have to say I am sorry if I offended anyone everyone is definately free to offer the comments, opinions, smart remarks whatever...thanks :)

I think sometimes, I wonder what that means. I use it all the time. Or dance outfit. But if your not gonna use it cause it's a white man word, so is the word dance clothes. There both in English. But now I wonder how to say it in my language? Hmm. I'm gonna ask and maybe start using that instead of the two words above.

I call em whatever comes to mind.. never costume that's the big a Tonto NoNo:NoNo...:rofl2:... don't really get hung up on it. Too many important things going on for that. Most of the ones that I see get riled up over the use of a term has been white people.. dang.. so many rules.... so little time!

I agree with Ruby2 and Numunu.
I use the word regalia when I describe my dance outfit to non Indians because they can understand the value of my outfit through the description "regalia." I think the word regalia came into use to cancel out the word costume. On the flip-side . . . I have actually heard many older fancy dancers call their dance outfits "costumes" or "rigs." But in this age of political awareness, even Indians have conformed.

Hey,
I use outfit(s) most of the time. Regalia could be a $5.00 word for outfit. I never use costume because clowns wear costumes and I am not a clown. Most white people get upset when corrected.

depends on if I'm holding my mouth right LOL but most of the time I call them my dance clothes or traditional clothes.
I've never had a problem with regalia simply for it fits that meaning that cited above Quote:
Miriam Webster Definition: Main Entry: re·ga·lia Pronunciation: ri-'gAl-y& Function: noun plural Etymology: Medieval Latin, from Latin, neuter plural of regalis Date: circa 1540 1 : royal rights or prerogatives 2 a : the emblems, symbols, or paraphernalia indicative of royalty b : decorations or insignia indicative of an office or membership 3 : special dress; especially : FINERY we all probably have a word in our native languages that is comparable don't you think?

Costumes
I totally agree with the whole costumes things...it drives me crazy when I hear people say wow look at your beautiful costume and I usually say I aint trick or treatin...or when they look at my jingle dress and say jingle bells...or say about a powwow hey you mean you hey ya ya ya ya all of that makes me feel like a bull in a china shop!!! GRRRR...yeah I suppose you all are right you all have posted very funny, insightful, and good things a look on the brighter side if you will. I don't know why Regalia bothers me much...guess I will just have to build a bridge and get over it...:) Thanks

:Eyebrows Costumes and jingle bells :NoNo
My 3 year old niece calls it her "Hey ya dress" because she listens to "Hey ya" Music and wants to go to "Hey ya" and dance. She is starting to call it a pow wow, but it's so cute when she asks, "Auntie, we go to Hey ya this weekend?" |

ha ha ha ha
Hey Ya dress lmao...that's so cute...its funny to hear what a child will say about their clothes...and what they call a powwow...that is tooo sweet. Yeah I mean I feel great in my dance clothes and when so much work is put in to it...and the meaning behind it etc...it is like a suit of honor...I would rather say suit of honor than regalia. I just would love to know who started that on the circuit atleast that it spread like wildfire..because years ago I never heard it until just the past maybe 5 years or so I have been hearing it on the circuit.
