Share your bunk pow-wow experiences. Hopefully this thread will help all us pow-wow people avoid crucial mistakes the next time we're on a pow-wow committee.
Here's what happened to me.......
The committe was purdy green, bull-headed and without the mentality/brain power to comprehend how pow-wows are run. So here's what happened.....
It's a one day pow-wow with two sessions.
I was busy that morning so I missed the 1st session.
Right before supper break I called over to the pow-wow and got the scoop from the connections.
They said, "there's no fancy dancers get over here!"
I said, "cool! I'm there, register me!"
I got there during supper break, danced in grand entry, tore it up in the contest.....it was a battle----the judges were undecided cuz:
1.Me --had all kindz of dope movez!!
2.Myself-----was faster than grease lightning!!
3.I-------nailed the stop!!!!
So then they announced the winnerz and didn't even call me up!! Not Myself and not even I......none of us!!

Should have taken 1st, 2nd and 3rd.....but didn't get a dang thang!!!

They said, "u were late" in a Steve Irkle kind of voice taboot!!!

I was steam'n mad, tried to get a grip....an' let'em have a pc. of my mind. I feel bad about my response....next it will be different. That's the scoop ya'll.
Reminders for future pow-wow committee people:
1. Post the rules & give dancers a singers a copy.
2. Treat the dancers and singers with respect.
3. If the participants are not registered DON"T give them a number.
4. If u don't have money don't advertise it!! (seems kind of obvious and I know all you good folks wouldn't do this ....but somehow it happens!!)

what comes to my mind is all the pow-wows in British Columbia

attention committee members:
~if you say its going to be a contest, don't change it to a traditional at the last minute :wall:
~dancers, singers, and spectaters.......we all need shade on a hot day....not JUST the announcer!!!
~have grand entry when you say your going to have it, don't be making everybody late or early
~don't have wacked out parking like a km away from the arbor

what happened to me a few times allready this summer

they exibitioned the adults out,
did the juniors....had HELLA specials, and had us standing by
we were ALL ready..all waiting, then after they were all done, they stopped everything and started supper break and excused us till 7:00 grand entry :33:
dang......this happened like 4 pow-wows in a row
they said that their going to contest us right after the grand entry after supper break, so we got all ready again, then they had all the intertribals, exibitioned juniors. had MORE specials, and we didnt start teen contest till midnight

I was reading what you wrote and for some reason I got the impression you were on the committee? I'm wrong right....Please tell me i'm wrong, or mistaken or confused.....Oh and if i'm right.....Naw I can't be....?

Oh the experiences I can pontificate on.....Hmmmmm? Oh! Don't ever, ever ever ever ever....Let your Powwow go full blast right up till the last session and have yourself escorted in by the State Police...to make a lame azz announcement that there is ZEE Cash....! Hialeah Florida early 90's...Remember that one...?

TABULATION sheets.....A Key 2 a Contest Powwow.....Committee have them ready 2 go.....Don't wait until the Head Judge cruises in and he has 2 make them....Oh that was fun, indeed!

College Powwows....Do tell the participants...YES Indicate this on a poster or flyer well in advance if you will be paying by check especially if the Powwow ends in the evening as well as a Sunday.....I.E. just about the only thing you can do with a check is blow your nose or barely wipe your azz....

SOUND! Oh! yes sound....Have someone who is capable of running a board...And be sure your sound is set for the participants.....

So sad, I feel your pain, I like the part where you can use the powwow check as tissue though, now I have a vivid portrait in my head and won't be able to sleep.

I went to one pow-wow, missed the whole first night, but made the to the (last) 2nd day. They advertised contests and dancers had numbers. I went to register (even though I knew I wouldn't win). Registration hum haw'd around about letting me sign up, then I realized that they didn't want to let me, even though they didn't say no, their body language suggested NO.

All through the afternoon and night the MC kept on reminding everyone that they need to dance for the love of dancing, not the money or contests. I told my friend about my attempted registration experience and what the MC keeps on saying, I figured that they just didn't have the money as expected.

Sure enough, the pow-wow ran without running off any kind of contests, exhibitions instead, then they thanked everyone for coming and shut it down.

I told myself I would not go back to that pow-wow anymore and I havn't (it's been 12 years). But wouldn't you know it, now it is a big kick a$$ pow-wow now.

It's easier to just create a tabulation program thing on laptop. That way you just have to enter the info and BOOM!! It tabulates for you. Makes it a lot easier and there are WAY less errors!

Just as long as you create backups or hard copies. One year a buddy mine was using his laptop for registration. An electrical spike hit and blew his laptop away. Fortunately for him, he had his print outs and cd backup stored away.

Ahh, doing Tabulation sux, believeee me!! No matter if its on Computer or paper, cause U dont get to watch the pw!!
