Suggestions needed for a summer powwow
Yá’át’ééh,
I happen to know of a three day powwow that's coming up in July in Arizona where the temperature can get very high mixed in with possible thunderstorms. What can you folks provide in terms of ideas and suggestions to make this an event that will accomodate the singers, dancers, and spectators in a way where the weather conditions can be more tolerable? As the time gets closer, I will provide these suggestions to the committee for their considerations. Ahéhee’ dóó hagoónee’. |

if you're talking about Camp Verde, one thing lots and lots of water for everyone, in a very easily accesible spot.....preferably near the drums in a big 35 gallon ice chest or trash barrel lined with plastic bags and ice......also, no outrageous admission prices.......ummmm, more shade possibly canopies for everyone not just having them bring there own.....also keeping the amount of specials down to maybe just one per session that way no one is out there for too long standing in the sun......

my 'tres centavos'
Don't contest till after sundown? That alleviates the need for shades and big coolers/ice chests/trash cans full of water/powerade etc...
....plus, folks who paid the outrageous prices to get into the stands won't have to strain to see beyond the canopies, cause there won't be any. Have all yer specials in the daylight hours, or like between the hours of one and five PM. Camp Verde's just too friggin hot!!!!! You gotta totally be a powwow junkie to hit this one up.......only hotter place to have one at this time of year would probably be in Vegas, Death Valley, Yuma, AZ, or outdoors, on blacktop in Phoenix!!! I personally don't mind the rain.....we sure could use some!! BTW, I believe this whole format, of contesting in the evenings, seems to work out okay for places like Livingston aka.....Alabama-Coushatta. It's fairly warm down there, and just humid as heck! .....but, it's pretty nice in the evenings.

I agree with R on Rye, if this is a hot powwow, then after the noon grandentry, ehibition the dancers and let them go then do the Specials. If it's miserably hot, most powwows have compassion and don't make the dancers dance in the midday heat for fear of dancers getting heat stroke, dehydrated, etc.

you know like everyone said, have the contests in the evening, or maybe cut the powwow off around 4 for supper break and resume G.E. at 6, then have 2 songs per category so the dancers and spectators also the drums can enjoy what they paid for and are attedning for.....and yes having the specials in the afternoon after exhibitioning the dancers (4 separate groups, all combined) would be a real good idea....

Don't have it in a dusty arena. It's not hot in camp verde people. Come to phx and see what hot is. I used to dance all summer at where I worked at in 100+(easily +) and I never complained. That was before we built ourselves a dressing room. Then that's when we got spoiled. TV, Radio, DVD, PS2, AC. Yup that's when we got spoiled. Have a bunch of fans to cool off people. Barrels of drinks should help too. Too bad I'm banned indefinately from cliff castle casino.

Just so everyone knows, I am not affiliated with the powwow or the casino or the nation. I've only helped out with sound reinforcement for a couple of years and I want to provide some insight from different people's perspective that the committee can ponder over.
If you've ever been to the Verde Valley Powwow (sponsored by the Camp Verde Yavapai Apache nation and the Cliff Castle Casino), you will know that the arena is inside the Star Gazer Pavilion which is a sloped outdoor concert venue with high bleachers on two sides. The good thing about this is that there is always green grass all over. Last year, the committee had these hugh cool air blowers placed around the arena. Thank you for the inputs so far! |
