i got some friends that believe than now these days powwows are becoming way too commercial and that the miss indian world pagents are way too much now...wut do ya guys think? i think it s all good in fun so why criticize..

first off I think this probably should have been posted in powwow talk.lol. and the miss indian world pageant is that.. a pageant and it gives some prestige and noterioty to a fine young native woman.. so there's no reason really to cut on it. As far as powwows being commercial.. that's a pretty generalized statement and not all powwows deserve to be put in that supposition.

yay i know thats why i was like why diss on it ya know? but i got friends that do ..maybe they got a stick stuck up in their butt...heck these are the same ppl that think fancy shawl is bull..but yay maybe i shouldve posted this in powwow talk didnt realize that until now...maybe theres a way to move this thread to there?

If you want it moved.. just ask one of the moderators of this area.

I wonder why they dis on it... It's not exactly a beauty pageant. It's not that shallow. They are judged on cultural knowledge as well as academics and talent. Besides, they can't judge on beauty when every native gal out there is a beauty eh? :D

Sure your entitled to your opinion as well as your buddies....

For that matter a number of your larger Celebrations are fun....I'll tell ya what though it's alot of hard work to put on a Powwow....Small, medium, or large....And ya'know there is nothing worse then busting your azz all year and to have someone sit there and whin around about how commercial the Powwow was.....Weak!

well, like i saw posted earlier "what isnt"... is exactly the question. i remember this one NA student day, and we had an elder asking the children, "what is your culture" and some of them said "pow wow" and the elder said "pow wow is not culture".....i suppose at first this statement puzzled me, but it made sense once i thought about it. we have longhouse and different native churches that are culture. so i suppose pow wow is our form of pop culture.

but dont generalize it as not having traditions. like any other pop culture, it has roots. like anything, we do not want it to be too exposed and commercialized...which is more reason to keep true to your traditions, such as, your tribes style of dancing and singing, differneces that are appreciated in the pow wow scene.

but do not mix that up w/ what your tribe does culturally, like feasts, sweat etc etc.

i suppose the only commercial aspect of pow wows i dislike are the "authentic" claims by venders and others who SELL traditional/cultural products (not including accesories like hair ties, jewelry etc etc, yall know what im talking about)

and the emphasis on time (such as rushing ceremonies and CONSTATLY reminding peeps that "we are on a schedule") ndn's like to visit and have a good time...hence the name as a "CELEBRATION" later dubbed "pow wow"....plus i dont like being rushed...

exactly powwow is not culture its a celebration of it where we can all come together and have a good time. Criticism of this and that is all nonsense. If you had fun isnt that what matters in powwows. Enjoying who we are. But some skins are taking it all serious as if it was our culture. The people you belong too is your culture love it and live it.

If you don't enjoy pow-wow don't go, plain and simple; no one forces you to go. If you don't like a particular pow-wow don't go again. There are plenty of alternatives listed on the calendar at this website. But PLEASE don't hang around *****in and moanin ruining it for everyone else.

well the purpose of this thread is to get suggestions on how i should handle this cuz i keep on going round and round with them about how powwows are okay to go to....i just dont understand their reasoningin in thgouht why they think powwows are way too commercial and cuz its just a general topic of dicussion..-becca
