I'd have to say the Snake Island singers are quickly making a name for themselves in this category. I heard them in Lansing and they sounded tight.

Porcupine singers are probably the most underrated drum groups around. They get snobbed alot cause there lead singer is white in fact i think he's irish. But they definatley have it going on and some of the song they come out with are so old school that sometimes they get mistaken for new stuff. :D

I applaud you in mentioning the Porcupine Singers (Porcupine, SD) as one of the best original groups. In fact, they're probably the orignial group dating back over 100 years. They officially retired a few years back and hardly travel anymore as most of their singers are older and find it hard to get around. They still sing locally and around the area in SD from time to time (danced to them at Porcupine Pow Wow 2000). As for their head singer being white...the man you're referring to is Ronnie Theisz, a wonderful singer respected throughout Indian Country for his singing ability and knowledge. However, he's not their lead singer. To be honest, I think Tom Thunderhawk is now, but it might be Cedric Young Bear. Most of the kids of the Porcupine Singers now form the Brotherhood Singers and are making a name for themselves. Porcupine Singers and Mandaree Singers have to be tops in this category!

Right on Mister!! My top three would be:
1. Porcupine
2. Mandaree
3. Badlands

I agree that Badlands definitely sounds awesome each time they sing and they've been doing it for years.

Since the 1970's the Badlands Singers have rocked the the house at virtualy every pow wow they've attended. Even now in 2001, even though they rarely travell I'd put Badlands with a 5 man crew up against any of the top groups at powwows today.Contemp,Southern, and original.
A LOYAL BADLANDS FAN

Hello everyone, Well i agree with most of the groups mentioned. But if u talk old school we shouldn't forget about a kick *** group from the late 70's. MUSKWACHEES JR'S They were a group that was number one back then. Anyone ever hear of them?
From what i heard they were the best, I dunno but from the tapes i heard, they sound pretty good even by todays standards. ;)

As for the Porcupine singers,.... I have been singing with them for the past 3 yrs, and Melvin Young Bear usually takes the lead. As far as Cedric is concerned, he is kinda like the mananger. Tom Thunderhawk sings with his own group on occasion.

Most of the guys are now spread out...but still do a few community dances. The only old timers left are Calvin Jumping Bull, Ronnie Theisz, and Irving Tail...though I havent seen Irving in a few yrs.

I should add that Brotherhood Singers are now defunct, after receiving permission to carry the Porcupine name.

Cool

YeeEE-HAaaAa...Rocking the Rez the Original way!! The absolute BEST original groups in all of pow-wow land are the original groups. I can't say who is the number one of them all because they are all hard core rockers. So...in no particular order here are the hard cores of the trails...
a)(we rock too) Big Bear
b) Mandaree (always been a favorite)
c) High NooN (had my support since they started)
d) Eagle Whistles (old school jammers)
e)mountain soul
f)trail mix
g)porcupine
h)hay stack
i)mystic river
j)crooked lake
k)and so on...

Just a little note to THE ROCK...
you suck man, know your role aye bud. Sure high noon and big bear are Cree. To the bone. Maybe they sing songs that aren't cree but so do other groups. Because you wear clothes made in a white worls and communicate in a white language everday does that make you white? Besides, the highest, HIGHEST , form of compliment is impression. I don't think I would be mad if I heard any of the above groups singing one of my grandfathers songs. Would you. Especially in contest. Besides all that, a good song is a good song. I like singing good songs. I don't care who the hall made them. If I can use, them I will. If you want to check out a tune from the Big Bear singers you might want to go to the sweetgrass records web site. Or maybe NooN records web site. Maybe there is a sound bite for you to chew on HIGHNLOWS. Hope I don't sound too much like an A-hole. Just being friendly. Have a nice day... :)

Does Stoney Park get no love? I heard them up at Schemitzun a couple of years ago and they were singing fools. Haystack is up there, and so is Eyabay. I will say however that Snake Island is good from what I've heard of them. Nothing in person though. But Im a southern boy so take that for what it's worth.
