There is a small pow wow at the High School in Ft Yates, ND. I stopped by to check it out. About 15 drums there, all SIOUX. We use to travel alot in SD circut about 15 yrs ago and I haven't heard some of those songs since then. Elks Whistle, Crazy Horse Jrs (these guys are just kids, but they can sing), Porcupine, Lakota Thunder, Tatanka Najin, Dakota Nation, Lakeside etc etc. You are missing some old songs!!

Man, that sounds like an awesome pow wow! Too bad, there's nothing around here like that :(

That's quite a drum list man! Porcupine, Dakota Nation, Lakeside...Crazy Horse Jrs. is a really young group, but man, those kids wail!! Makes me wish I was out there now.

Ft. Yates is an ok place too...they have a really friendly IHS clinic...the people are a lot more friendly and helpful than here :)

cho man, sounds like it was a good one. those are the good old times, all the sioux songs coming out again. wish i could have been there, but hope to this summer. you guys go there often, throughout the summer, to these powwows? this year i hope to do that. i have an isida that lives there. married out there and all. i just wanted to put in my two cents.

The outdoor season is starting on Standing rock this coming week end in Kenel, SD. That is a traditional pow wow. Cannon Ball is the week end of June 8, 9, & 10. Cannon Ball always brings in lots of drums and dancers. I have a poster for Cannon Ball I can email if you are interested. It is to big to post here but I will email it to you if you like.

Lakota Thunder was nominated for a grammy, Elk's Whistle, Porcupine maybe Eagle Mountain probably have recordings out, not sure with what label. The rest of the drums you would have to go to a local pow wow in South Dakota to hear those local, Old school drums and songs. Its worth the trip if you like that style of singing.

I haven't been "back home" since I was middle-school aged in 1982! I went to a Powwow in my family's home town of Wakpala and heard PORCUPINE SINGERS for the first time (and the last time in person for me). Out in Washington, we get occasional visitations from: EYA-HEY NAKODA, RED PAINT CREEK and a few others. Don't know of any all-Lakota or even mostly-Lakota drums up here in the Northwest. Considering the area, that would be different.
