I will be going to this one!
It will be a great time of year, since the Carolina coast has such wonderful fall weather......barring no Hurricaines..LOL.. John Blackfeather is a great MC.... Eastern Bull are wonderful too! Ya'll come on down ya here! I think the Wall of Honor is great, I will post a pic of my Dad there. He served all his life in the Navy from 1942 until retirement. I'll have to get a Powwow.com tee shirt to wear... I liked the mission statement on the web link you provided, It makes everyone feel welcome!

Ok people...
More Great Salt Water Powwow news... The educational fair on Friday is turning out to be bigger than expected. Around 2,000 school kids are coming in for the fair and they are in for quite a treat. They will receive invaluable lessons about our native culture & history... as well as get a good lesson in veteran appreciation-- especially in terms of Indian contributions to our nation's military history. .... And finally... We have up the host hotel information on the Great Salt Water website. There are THREE different host hotels for this powwow. http://www.greatsaltwater.com/host_hotels.htm I would strongly advise that anyone headed down for this one go ahead and make a reservation. Looks like there are going to be a LOT of people coming from all over the country for this so just know that the early birds will get the hotel rooms. There will be camping available at the fairgrounds as well... but just for tents and that. No camper hookups for RVs or anything, though. You can bring an RV... you just won't be able to hook it up. Just a little more than a month away now, folks... Holy Smoke! Where did the time go? If anybody has any questions, they can e-mail me: sarita@southstarmedia.com |

Are there dance and signing contests? I looked on the website and didn't see any info about that. Thanks.

There are no contests planned right now for this powwow.
Rather than competition being the centerpiece, there are two main focuses of this first annual event. One is the educational fair... which will hopefully bring some awareness to the necessity for the public schools to focus more on teaching our history, and our role in the nation today. The second main focus is really going to be the veterans and active duty service people particularly in this time while we've got so many of our own over fighting in the Middle East. As everyone should know, this powwow is taking place just down the road from Camp Lejeune... which is the largest Marine Corps base in the country. Typically, there is a large Indian population stationed at Lejeune at any given time. There are a lot of natives from Lejeune stationed overseas right now. For folks worried about the money thing... From what I understand, there will be blanket dances throughout the powwow for different drums that show up other than the host drums. And I have also heard talk of there being drawings throughout the day each day for dancers who are out in the circle when their numbers are called. So there will be some opportunities for money, although not in a grand scale like in a big prize money powwow. If this powwow turns out to be the success that we're hoping for, then perhaps next year we'll look at opening things up to some good ol' fashioned contests. ;) |
