Lightbulb powwow songs

Will this site ever allow FREE downloading of Powwow music so we all can enjoy listening to all the different drum groups at our leisure?

I am sure the drum groups would not mind receiving some royalties out of this suggestion.

Maybe with a few strict guidelines were enforced this might actually become a popular trend..

What are your thoughts on this?

First if you downloaded it for free, how would they recieve royalties?

The drum groups and recording companies spend a lot of money producing the CD's. Allowing free downloads would be taking money from this groups. I don't see there every being free downloads of songs.

Being a drum group, and a top group espeically, takes a lot of money. These guys need this revenue for travel expenses, families, etc. I believe PowWows.com should support them in thier ventures, not hinder them.

Pow Wow Radio is a great resource to listen to these groups - for free. But the main reason that recording companies and drums agree to allow us to play this music (for free) is that it helps promote the sale of thier cd's.

well...it is only a suggestion for petes sake.

I do respect the drum groups and i know that it takes alot of sacrifice to be a drummer b/c I have family that dance and sing.

Anyway,good day to all.

Try Limewire. They have quite a few! Just type in the name of the drum and hit search.

Remember that the drums don't get anything from Limewire!

Support the drums and buy the CD!

So where is a good place to buy the CD? Is there a list of drummers' sites? I would like to find a way to buy direct so that the drummers get as much of it as possible.

PS > If anyone knows how to find the site (or CDs) of Yellow Bird (out of Oklahoma) please post, pm or email me.
TIA

Ripping Music

I have a big problem with ripping music off the net. It's so much better to buy the CD. First of all you get a higher quality product when you purchase the CD. When you rip a CD from the net, the best you will ever get is a 16 bit data stream at 44.1 khz. OK OK most people dont understand the numbers.

The bit set is a sound quality factor. 16 bit is the standard computer soundcard format. So you will burn your ripped CD at 16 bit max. Telephone sound is 8 bit. We all know what you sound like on a telephone. Yuch!!!!

The 44.1 khz is the frequency that all standard CDs are played at on a standard home CD player or walkman type portable player. Your CD rom in your computer uses the same standard.

If you rip from the net this is the best you will ever get with your computer unless you spend some big bucks on professional sound cards and other sound equipment. By the way, most systems will only let you download at 16bit @44.1 khz so you do not clog up theis systems with long downloads. Mp3 have a lower quality but are faster downloading because the file size is smaller.

Most good recording studios record at at least 32bit @ 96khz. That's a really big quality jump from a net download or rip. The master CD recorded at the studio is then compressed to 32 bit at 44.1khz for copy.

That's the quality factor between a home brew recording and the big boys at the studios. If you want to loose 1/2 the quality then be my guest and rip away. It's your ears.

Now lets look at it from the drum's end.
A professional recording will cost a drum between $5000 and $7500 in the studio including all the necessary bells and whistles. Studio time runs between $50 and $250 an hour. You can cut one good track in about 2 to 4 hours of studio time. The clock ticks cash spent from the time you walk in the door to the time you walk out of the studio even if you don't record anything worthwhile. The adverage studio cost to record the CD is about $3500 for 10 to 12 tracks of music. OK the drum just spent $3500 just to record the music. Now we have to deal with mixdown, editing, and retake time. Figure another $1000 for that. Now we come to mastering time. That's where the CD is actually put together and all the levels and volumes are set to proper standards. Mastering time will cost you $35 to $125 a program minute. a one hour CD can cost up to $7500 at a major studio.

We have not even gotten to art work for the CD or jacket yet.

All in all, a drum will spend big bucks just to get the CD out the door ready for sale. Drums don't want their music ripped when they spend big bucks on making that CD.

By the time a drum produces their first 100 copies ot their CD, the cost to them is around $10,000. Most drums buy their own CD for about 8 bucks a copy and sell for between 12 to 20 per copy. You have to sell a lot of CDs before you start to break even or make a profit.

If you rip a drum CD, you dishonor and cheat the drum, you dishonor yourself, and you get a product of lesser quality.

Buy the CD and get the better quality and be able to live with yourself. Don't cheat the drum and cheat yourself. No one wins that way.

A drum can make it's own CD in a basement somewhere but they won't get the quality or expert knowhow that they would get at a fair to good studio. You will hear the difference.

Ken

One thing I forgot to mention: When you rip a CD from the internet, noise is added in the data stream from the telphone or cable TV lines. You may not be able to hear that extra noise, but It's There on your ripped CD. That noise translates into data dropout on playback because your CD player or computer tries to translate the noise into useable sound.
One missed or messed up byte of data can make your ripped CD useless. It's your time and money!!!!!!!!
