just wear something comfortable...normal street clothing..well the ppl in the gallery that look white might be part native so its okay for them to dance..

oh almost forgot dont wear anything that shows cleavage and mid drift...and wear a shawl...especially when ya enter for community dances...yar family will respect ya for this but if ya come in and dance with a sports bra on that looks bad on yar family as well as yar self and yar husband.....pretty much jest enjoy the powwow and dont fret...jest learn things will go smoothly and have fun..

N8Vs like to tease, and thats where you think your misconception about "joke" is coming from. Not everyone that posts in here will answer your question or give you the answer you want to hear.

My advice is to just wear something nice, since it's your "first time" at a pow-wow. Don't worry about whether you should wear a cloth dress or not.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying wear heals or anything, but something comfortable, but present YOURSELF, not your clothes.

MelissaM is an unknown quantity at this point
This thread has been helpful to me. I, too, am white (though we are pretty sure some of my ancestors were Cherokee but there isn't any absolute proof). While I am not in the exact same situation as you (I'm still single), I would really like to attend a powwow at some point in the near future.

I'm a bit confused as to what is meant by a shawl and how it is supposed to be worn. Does anyone have a photo to demonstrate how the shawl is worn? Obviously, I would just be a spectator, so would I need to wear one?

Here are some pics of how a shawl is worn. They are only shots from the back, but you get the idea.

Homalosa is correct for all you need is scissors, needles, thread, fabric and ribbon. Oh, and a ruler if you're a perfectionist.

Yes, duct tape! I like the way the duct tape fuses into the fabric.

LOL,
That reminds me. Somebody asked me, "is it true Indians fix everything with duct tape?"
I looked at them blankly and replied in one breath,"yes it is. now move on."
