I agree with the wear regular clothes - you could do a skirt and blouse - just make the skirt on the longish side (rather then short) and be sure to be modest with cleavage and bare arms/shoulders - you're not going to the beach.

I would just like to say or recommend that you sit this one out. Go, have a good time, watch, sit with your family, take a shawl and then talk to your inlaws. Your family is the deciding factor. Everything you do at these dances reflects back to your family. IF your husband is good with the dress and dancing thing then go with it.
This is your first dance. Enjoy it!!!! Good luck.

Your husband said,"do what you feel."
That's a lame answer, and I don't believe he is ready to take on the responsibility of standing up for you coming into the circle. You sound like a nice person, and I think much of you at least trying to ask around. I believe you should stay on the sidelines in support of your husband's dancing; joining in when invited, and waiting for the day when he and his family are ready to bring you into the circle. |

Thanks for all the posts, I had a good talk with my family and we are on the same wavelength now...
It all boiled down to this: my family was trying to include me, and I didn't want to come across as every other white tourist at the event. So I think I'll stick with the one suggestion of a long skirt and the other suggestions for bringing a shawl. And since I'm not into flashing my flab, I will be modestly covered |

Sounds like a plan! Thanks for having a cool chin with the jokes too. I'm still ROFL at your tribal affiliation!

OMG one year I went to this Powwow in TN. and I wore a long skirt and a blouse but the blouse was an inch too short and an Elder came up to me and gave me a shawl to wear because I forgot mine. don't show any skin if your going into the circle.
