Thank you the information, Historian.
I must say from personal experience, that any animal, if respected and honored properly, will bring protection rather than bad luck to the person who stops and takes the time to communicate and learn from that animal.... I believe that Creator sends animals to us for a reason.

I have to agree Singin Deer. I've pretty much grown up with the whole 'owls are bad medicine' idea being tossed at me. But I was never convinced, to be honest I have more bad luck when I see a raven, but yet at the same time I still respect the raven, because he has always given me advanced warning. I've had similar experiences with owls, anything bad was minor. We woke up one morning to a tree laying accross the yard, the night before an owl had been sitting in it 'talking' to me. I'm guessing he was telling me the tree was goin down. I do believe aswell that by respecting 'any' animal you do gain that animals trust and protection. For the most part I feel protected by owls.
That said, I deffinately agree with the majority, that it would not be a good idea to use owl feathers in regalia, not for any intertribal event.

All I have to say is that, in the eco system where i live i see owls all the time. 3 kinds. And I watch listen and "chirp"! (talking) to the Owls. And I cannot say my life is filled with bad luck. I see and hear Owls nearly every other day. And I live, so far, a good life.

Meaning of the owl
We were taught that the owl was a messenger of death. The thing is death could mean a couple of things. Physical death or the end of a time in your life....Like, a divorce or graduation, etc. So I guess depending on how you look at it, an owl can be a messenger of new beginnings or of death.

Owl stuff
I have always been told that owls are the great messengers, they bring news of family deaths, good fortune, good and bad weather, deliver dreams, take away nightmares, births, all important messages. I have also been told by my elder that owls and parts are powerful to persons who are touched with certain gifts, owl and parts are worn by medicine people, luck children, herbists, and others. As a luck child I wore a owls foot w/talons and a mess bustle that included owl feathers, I did stop wearing them though because certain paiute dancers would toss stones and salt at my bustle because it was thought by them to be death feathers. The foot w/talons was put in my regalia suitcase someday I will decide what I will do with it. I have also seen Sioux feather bonnets made of owl feathers but know nothing of them...

As a a child of 11, I had a great white owl come into our house and roost in my bedroom. In the morning it leaped on to my arm and I walked around the house, until my little brother begged to hold it, and when I went to let it hop on his arm, the door flew open from the wind and the great white owl flew off.
True story.

I agree with ojibwaysweetie. Not all tribes have the same "beliefs". As for the "respect" for this creature as some stated in this thread, I agree. I think that owls are intended to be apart of our lives, otherwise there would be no such thing as an owl, but yeah, ojibwaysweetie does have a point about different tribes.

It was explained to me this way:
Sometimes a dream is just a dream. Sometimes a dream is something important. Sometimes seeing an animal is just an animal. Sometimes seeing an animal is something important. Once you have had the two kinds of dreams you will know the two kinds of animals. The difference between the two kinds of animals has the same "feel" as the difference in the two kinds of dreams. Having said that different tribes believe different things. When going to an intertribal powwow, it seems that it would be best to avoid those things that might upset others. When you're with your own, then you can fully express your customs. Conversely, if you see something that makes you uneasy at an -intertribal- powwow, remember that all peoples do not believe the same. If that "something" would cause you problems (like an owl would for some) it would seem that the polite thing to do would be to leave. If it's a -tribal- pw, give someone who is qualified to speak tobacco and have them talk to the offending person. just my .02 |
