HIstory Question about the 49???

We were talking with some friends at Ponca Pow Wow and were trying to figure out the history of why a 49 is called a 49???? Any ideas???

49ers - take place out of Oklahoma and are sometimes just a big party.

49's - take place in and around Oklahoma. There is usually people trying to sing one way or another.

9's - take place in the humid, hot summer nights IN Oklahoma. You betta' bring your recorder to the big ones!
