Give-Aways

I thought this might be an interesting thread to discuss. I have seen humorous Give-aways, extravagant Give-aways, cheap Give-aways, and so forth. SO.......

What type of items have you gifted during a Give-away?

let's see,
Since I'm a teacher I once gave book bundles to kids. They seemed to like them. One nephew read every book in the bundle and asked for a second.

what else was interesting........
oh, we make bathroom toiletries baskets with the small shampoos, conditioners, and lotions my mom Comchocldy collects (she's a flight attendant).

My sister's non-Native friend was so happy she got a tent at a give-away. She went home and when she opened it up it was a used tent with a big rip in it. Oh well, it the thought that counts.

When it comes to giveaways, give till it hurts and then some. Do the best you and your family can. Items could include things like Pendleton blankets, vests, horses, beadwork, bustles, complete dance outfits, shawls, food, tipis, etc.

I've always admired Crow and Ponca giveaways. Our nation's giveaways are probably third behind those guys.

Ah, yes...this is the way I was brought up. I was also brought up to know that you give the best that you can.

See and I was also taught that you give in a good way. If it was intentionally given with knowledge of the rip, I wouldn't consider it given in a good way--which is sad in itself. But if it wasn't intentional, well, I guess that show that one should inspect or be more knowledgeable about what is being given away.

It depends on what the giveaway was for too. When we had my son's "first kill" (for his first buck), we had to give away all the things that he used on his hunting trip, all the camping gear right down to his clothing, boots and rifle. So I know used things were given away but the recipients knew they were used. Also none of the things were in bad shape. We also gave away a lot of new stuff mainly things for the men, camping and hunting things and dried roots, deer meat and dried salmon, canned huckleberries etc. Of course Pendletons and beadwork too but my point was that there were used items given out but it was for a reason and nothing in poor shape was given out. I think whoever gave your friend the tent probably didn't know the tent was ripped and would feel really bad if they knew it was, I would think it was a mistake and not done intentionally.

At the giveaways up here in the Athabascan villages, we give fabric by the yard, blankets, beaded mooseskin slippers and gloves, rifles, dishes, shirts, jackets, hats, etc. etc. They are really good giveaways up here; I remember going to one on the Warmsprings reservation when my grandma's sister died in the early 80's, it was a very good giveaway also.

Smile Our giveaway

For my husband's giveaway last month we tried to be creative and at the same time traditional...we did shawls, blankets, tobacco and then for the drum we filled laundry baskets with bottled water, cough drops, lemons, tobacco, hand towls that I had put iron ons on, shawl bags, travel pillows in homemade & store bought pillow cases. Plus we did some very personalized gifts for some special friends, family, and my husbands sponsers/ mentors... We wanted to do so much more but pretty much ran out of funds... I made alot of his giveaway items and did it with materials I bought at Wal-Mart & Hobby Lobby.. It was neat for me to do it and it was more special to give having had a hand in it I guess....

Our giveaways usually consist of blankets and textiles, tobacco, tolietires ,animals, and we also make up special bundles fer the kids like toys childrens blankets and bags of candies. Ohh and the food... Ohhh the food heheh. As long your heart in the right place then its all good but we try not to leave out anyone.
I dont think sumone giving a ripped tent had the right intentions... thats like giving a homeless shelter clothes that are dirty and unwashed. In my opinion anyway

Tsiniti is on a distinguished road
I recently attended a give a way that had individual bungee cords, and some of the little storage boxes that come in a package of ten , but were on the blanket as individuals. I can understand if the people don't really have much money. but I was embarrassed for the lady.

I had a private give a way for my daughter's 18th birthday, we gave cake and bottled water, and to the family who was nice enough to bring the cake, a gift basket of my scented soaps, and some fancy popurrie boxs with individual soaps in each one.

I say private, more behind the pow wow because my daughter was embarrassed enough. But we shared with those we could, Drum, Staff, Vendors, Dancers, and Friends.

Exclamation Giveaways!

Everyone, including myself have seen giveaways of different levels and sizes.

I was taught to believe that it is not the size, or monetary value of the item that is given, but more importanly that it is given with a true heart. I understand that one should prepare with much thought and consideration before having a giveaway, and that your heart must think truly of how you want to show your apreciation to those you wish to present items.

Some persons having a giveaway buy items small and large and have a truckload. Others give what is belived to be of lesser worth to those watching, does that mean that the giveaway is less meaningful?????????????

What does that say of our Hearts?

I have heard whispers from onlookers that this item was so extravagant, or that item is so cheap! And most of the time the comments are from persons not even involved in the giveaway, except as being onlookers.

Once again I am no expert on this matter as I have hosted only one giveaway in my life, but I did make sure that every item I gave was meaningful, as well as usefull to the person I honoured!
