Personally, I prefer chest butting, when I first meet someone.

My understanding was that the handshake like the salute was to show the other person that you didn't have any weapons in your hand.

Lightbulb The hand shake.....

These are NOT MY thoughts (nor do I endorse this statement) but something I found on the net,so I'll throw it in to add fuel to the fire.

"There's the theory of the handshake's Egyptian origins, having been delivered as a gift from God. And there's the one about medieval strangers shaking hands to assure the other no weapons would be drawn.

Regardless of its origins, there's little doubt about its significance as a greeting and an indicator of just who you're dealing with."

Connections For further background on the history of Jim Crow, go to the jimcrowhistory.org Web site. What Was Jim Crow?
By Dr. David Pilgrim
PART ONE
Jim Crow was the name of the racial segregation system, which operated mostly in southern and border states, between 1877 and the mid-1960s. Jim Crow was more than a series of strict anti-black laws. It was a way of life. Under Jim Crow, African Americans were given the status of second-class citizens. Jim Crow helped to make anti-black racism appear right. Many Christian ministers taught that whites were the Chosen people, blacks were cursed to be servants, and God supported racial segregation. Many scientists and teachers at every educational level, supported the belief that blacks were intellectually and culturally inferior to whites. Pro-segregation politicians gave persuasive speeches on the great danger of integration: the destruction of the purity of the white race. Newspaper and magazine writers routinely referred to blacks as niggers, coons, and darkies; and worse, their articles reinforced anti-black images and ideas. Even children's games portrayed blacks as inferior beings (see "From Hostility to Reverence: 100 Years of African-American Imagery in Games"). All major organizations reflected and supported the oppression of blacks.
The Jim Crow system was based on the following beliefs: whites were superior to blacks in all important ways, including but not limited to intelligence, morality, and civilized behavior; relationships between blacks and whites would produce a mongrel race which would destroy America; treating blacks as equals would encourage interracial relationships between men and women; any activity which suggested social equality encouraged interracial sexual relations; if necessary, violence must be used to keep blacks at the bottom racial level. The following Jim Crow etiquette norms show how inclusive and pervasive these norms were:
A black male could not offer his hand (to shake hands) with a white male because it implied being socially equal. Obviously, a black male could not offer his hand or any other part of his body to a white woman, because he risked being accused of rape.
Blacks and whites were not supposed to eat together. If they did eat together, whites were to be served first, and some sort of partition was to be placed between them.
Under no circumstance was a black male to offer to light the cigarette of a white female--that gesture implied intimacy.
Blacks were not allowed to show public affection toward one another in public, especially kissing, because it offended whites.
Jim Crow etiquette required that blacks were introduced to whites, never whites to blacks. For example: "Mr. Peters (the white person), this is Charlie (the black person), that I spoke to you about."
Whites did not use courtesy titles of respect when referring to blacks, for example, Mr., Mrs., Miss., Sir, or Ma'am. Instead, blacks were called by their first names. Blacks had to use courtesy titles when referring to whites, and were not allowed to call them by their first names.
If a black person rode in a car driven by a white person, the black person sat in the back seat or the back of a truck."

Lightbulb the hand shake

Hay folks think this through laws are pass'd, lives were (and are ) lost and lands given an taken away over a hand shake.
Over this pass weekend I met a Navaho (Navajo) brother how said it was not his way to shake hands (w/people that were not his friends). The 2 above post by me were an attempt to show some of the out comes of a hand shake.

Where I'm from, it's our custom as Crees to shake hands and say "Wachiya". it seems universal when I meet other natives too. we shake hands. or sometimes not, if we're too shy. it's kinda awkward sometimes. but usually I shake hands.

Wow this really got me thinking. I'm in marketing and advertising and meet and greet new people everyday. In business it is a sign of respect. I'm Italian, but my fiance is Shinnecock/Hopi/Hochunk and both our families will only allow kisses and hugs and think handshakes are to impersonal. I'm not too sure if this goes for everyone. As far as the medieval thing, that is most definitely fact. Not only have I heard this before, but I am really into that stuff and just looked it up in a book of medieval customs and language. (yeah okay I'm a dork!) And as far as I know the whole Jim Crow thing was also true. The only discrepency is that in those days, any woman was called ma'am or miss no matter who the caller was.

We think that kisses and hugs are too personal for us, like for meet and greets. I'm not sure if it just wasnt part of our custom, or if it was the result of Residential School where you couldnt be affectionate. Where I'm from, now a days people kiss and hug, mostly families do that to each other now, however some still dont. Some Elders (mostly women) kiss and hug people, even if you're not family. But within our Cree communities amongst each other, it may be a sign of disrespect, to the Elders if we dont shake hands, cause they are the ones who taught us that tradition and they take that seriously. But they understand if it's someone who is not Cree and doesnt know the custom. They wont be disrespected if you hug and kiss them, if that's your way either.

only curtisy

I was taught from a very young child to always shake hands with everyone as you meet, family will hug and kiss. The family can be extended as well as the blood line.

Don't know of the origins.

Good topic and thoughts.
