Sneak Up song after the Victory Song

Why do some powwows have a sneak up song right after the victory song during grand entry?

I've been seeing this a lot more here in the northwest.
It seems weird to call for a sneak up song because all the women are out on the floor still - some women leave the floor, some women dance stationary on the side, and some women even dance w/ the men.

I come from Crow Creek South Dakota and we're now at our 144th annual powwow. The sneak up has always been done after the victory song. But things change and it depends on who's running the show. Anything can happen so it's best just to be prepared.

Are you from northern California? Because here in southern California we've been going to powwows since the 1980's. The sneak up has been a standard especially when Kelly Looking Horse used to put on a powwow unless it's run by a southern plains committee in which case a round dance will usually follow.

You have to understand that women have not been dancing in the arena for very long at all (WWII era really) so when songs like that were sung there were only men out there. The women made up the circle as they danced stationary on the outside.

Things change, and now some women enjoy dancing to a sneak-up song, but many will honor that old way and dance on the outside stationary.

as it becomes more and more common to sing sneak up songs when women are out on the floor ....do you think it'll become more and more common for women to be given sneak up songs during contest???

powwow evolution huh?

Anything can happen. At the Indio powwow in March 2004, the teen girl's fancy shawl category received a Southern ruffle/shake song.

I think more people should learn the words to that first song...it pretty much describes how to dance it if you listen to it. Those words also answer your question.

But, then again, most sneak-up songs being composed today aren't anywhere close in meaning to that original. Most are rock-n-roll songs. So who knows?

I'll teach my little girl about this song and its meaning, and if she loses future contests for walking to the side and dancing stationary then so be it.

I think those that don't know any better will walk off the floor. I always dance on the side, stationary.

My sister is a jingle dress dancer also and we'd always tell her to dance stationary during the sneak up. But, sometimes the singing is too good for her not to dance.

So dancing stationary isn't dancing?
