Just wondering what responsibilities the Arena Director has at a powwow, what do they do? And what makes a good Arena Director? :?????:

A Arena Director is a person to setup the dancers for the grand entry starting with flags and men trad and grass dancers and fancy dancers and women trad, jingle dancers and buckskin dancers and shawl dancers, and the kids start rolling out with same styles too. Thats the info from me. somebody will tell you more.

The arena director also determines the appropriate drums and the appropriate songs.

So who's job is it to set the agenda? would that be the Head Judge? Like who determines when they have there giveaways, during break or during the powow?? or who dances when?? or how many inter tribals between contesting categories!! WHO WHO I ASK..... :czyeyes:

The arena director has the final word. The head judge can suggest but the arena director is the main man. Same thing with everything else. Unless a sponsor with millions of dollars wants something done his way then the arena director will do what he has to do.

The arena staff answers to the powwow committee. The powwow committee sets the agenda and it is the responsibility of the head staff, that the powwow committee picks, to carry out this agenda.

Of course your powwow committee must be without inept qualities but here in southern California some powwow committees just are not all there. And of course the AD does not pick the judges which is what the head judge is for. But in my experience a good AD will know what to do. I applaud you for being so reliant on the powwow committee, good luck.

I also had this question when I was asked to be an arena director, and was I ever lost. The advice you were given is good. The arena director and the emcee work closely together to keep things moving,hopefully, smoothly. I wasn't, in my opinion, as good in that position as it deserved. I also learned that a good AD will watch the crowd as sometimes a certain song or the spirit of the Creator will touch the heart of someone and this is the time you must be willing to lend an ear or a shoulder if that is what is needed.
