Pregnancy Question

Never seen this discuss or heard anyone talking about it, but what are the protocols for someone that is pregnant being in the arena? Is it a problem??

We have several Pow Wows coming up including one where our good friends are head dancers. So she wants to at least dance thier special, if possble. Of course she can't fit in her outfits. But what are the 'rules' on this? Or are there?

Thanks!

Yeah, ditto what Super said. There was actually a question in one of the dancing forums a coupla years ago. Seems like Northern tribes say it's a no-no. One person said it's like returning your baby to Creator. So I think as Super said, it's best to look at the individual tribe. My folks don't powwow traditionally, so I danced during the first trimester. My daughter was a Winter baby, and by our Christmas powwow I was way big with early contractions. I stayed out to prevent preterm labor.

I was taught (Cherokee) that if you are "Mooning" or "With Child" you don't enter the arena or go near the Drum. But maybe this is a Southern thing.

Well round here their isn't a problem dancing while your preg. But my fiance believes that you shouldn't, so when I was preg. I didn't go into the arena at all after they blessed it. Just outta respect for him. It all depends on the tribe or person I guess. But like homalosa said it's like returning your baby to the creator. But when the baby is here it's a no-no to carry the baby or kid in the arena while your dancing. Whatever ya believe. Either way I respect while preg.

Yeah, I've read here on pws.com that it's a no-no but see it all the time. I had a special for my daughter when she was three months old because girls are rare in my husband's family of five brothers. So already having two sons, we prayed and asked for a girl. To give thanks and introduce her to the community we had a special. She's been dancing now every since. At three the girl carries herself like an old woman in that arena!

I know I see alot now too. But who follows things anymore?? I was always told not to. But when people are doing it nobody goes up to them and say hey don't do that. It's just whatever ya believe in. I'll never do it. It's up to the person and the arena director I guess.

Let me rephrase Who follows things anymore? I meant round here we was always told not to but some people round here switched their minds bout it. Anywhere else I don't know. Different tribes do different things. So ask round your area to see what people say. :)

Unhappy

She should also think about her baby's health. I heard of women dancing when they were pregnant and then the baby has problems afterwards. I also heard of women having miscarriages, too.

Me two I had cuzins dancing and miscarrying days later. I don't know if that had anything to do with it but they did believe at one time not to, but then they didn't care. We also put little tiny holes in the bottom of our babies mocs. Cuz we believe if we don't the spirit is locked inside and could take the baby from us. I don't know of too many people who believes in this way.
