Well tradish everyone has their own way of believing. I was taught that we shouldn't carry babies or kids in the arena because it's like offering them to the creator. Babies do not have that strength to walk on their feet and without that strength it's easier for the spirits to take them. When we walk on our feet in the arena we have that strength. We also put little tiny holes in our moccs. for the same reason. I don't know of any kids round here that is bashful to dance. They luv dancing round here. I don't know if I should take what you said offensive. I'm nobody to say that I'm right and your wrong. And no one else has that right either. So you do what you believe, and everyone else does what they believe. Everyone has different beliefs, Just cuz I believe my way doesn't mean I expect the whole entire nation to either. :Cooler

My mom always said that when you have a little one you should call their names before and after you go somewhere so that they don't get lost or tricked into staying somewhere they're not supposed to be.

We have head dancers that carry their child while dancing. It's usually celebrated around here when the dancers bring their new babies into the arena.

When does your baby stop being your baby? I guess I mean if it's not OK to begin with, when would it be okay, they're always your child, right?

Well said, Azhe'ni. Each tribe has their own beliefs about it, and what is said here should be respected just for the sake of good ole plain respect for other tribes' beliefs.

You are correct, Cherokee did not have "powwows" but we did have socials / gatherings and they did have a protocol. I as well, was taught that both in moon and with child you were not to dance nor go near the drum. There were other well defined no-no's for women in moon and with child but those are not for this forum obviously.

As for taking a baby into the arena I was told to take my baby into the arena for social type dances and interribals as well as going in with her for her first few times as a tiny tot. Which was mainly to help her go the correct direction and etc.

I must admit, they are absolutely adorable out there at 2, 3, 4 and etc.

I would have say that is it most certainly tribal specific and best to check before you go into arena pregnant.

Have a wonderful day!

:37: Glad you got that off your chest Blackfoothoney. I am also of the opinion that some things just seem ridiculous. You responded just as I have and find myself doing quite often around here. Being Cherokee and married to a Blackfeet who has friends from Blackfoot, Blackfeet and Lakota nations...I get stuff tossed my way a lot.

Like for example...that I cannot dance fancy shawl or jingle dance because I am a mother...ah well. It must be like water off a duck's back eh.

Hope you feel better now and have a wonderful day!

I was told that babys enter the circle when they can walk and they are brought into the circle in a formal way and moms stop dancing when they are pregnant until their baby "walks" into the circle for the first time.

What tha? Can't dance jingle or fancy if you're a mom? That's really--uh....weird...where did you say you heard that again? Its not weird, but kinda odd. Is there like some explination why you can't do that? hehe, just wondering, nosey me, lol.

Oh, and uh, I've seen lots of people around here dance when they're pregnant, but tradish, and seen lots of people carrying their babies in there. But how about this, if some people believe you shouldn't carry your baby in the arena, does that only apply to Native people, or people of any other race too? Cuz, like if an Asian, or Caucasian, Hispanic, etc person carried their baby in there during an intertribal, do you think that'd present a problem? One more question, if you have your baby in a cradleboard, or baby board, while you're dancing does that count as carrying your baby in the arena? I've seen that done several times.

This might sound like I'm trying to be a smart alek or something, because of my wording, but I'm not intending to make anyone mad or offend anyone. If I have, please excuse me, and don't take it personally.

Well that tidbit of info was tossed at me by the wife of my husband's friend. She is Lakota. I just smiled and told her she should check out the Gathering of Nations sometime because I am quite sure there were women dancing that were not only mothers...but well out of their teens and 20's. Like I say, I have gotten used to it so I just kindly disregard whenever possible and when that is not...I simply remind them that I also have traditions and teachings and I will live by those...and I walk on and continue my business.

Have a Great day!
