question from europe:which pow-wow to visit?

Hi
we will be coming from switzerland to usa this year and would like to visit at least one pow-wow. while we find a lot of information, when they take place, no clue seems to be available, which are the nice/best/most authenic ones to visit,
would appreciate your help

Listen to me. The only two states that I will recommend for authentic powwows are Oklahoma and South Dakota. I suggest that you try one powwow from from both of these states. Do not go to the east coast or mid-west for authentic powwows. If you want flash and dazzle Arizona is good for powwows because the Navajos have some of the best dancers but not necessarily the best singers as compared to South Dakota or Oklahoma. August is the best time for powwows in South Dakota. For Oklahoma powwows, I'd wait for a suggestion from a southern plains native American.

You're right Montana and North Dakota have the authentic credibility to be mentioned with Oklahoma and South Dakota.

I don't consider South Dakota midwest but northern plains, same thing with Oklahoma not midwest but southern plains.

Actually, I was just being silly. But you can't leave MN out!!!:Cry I know that the only states that are part of the Midwest is IL, IN, IA, MI, MN, MS, OH and WI. And the Plains are AR, IA (hhmmm..weird how IA can be the Midwest and the Plains), MS (same for MS), NE, OK and TX.

Oh, and the Great Plains include: MN, ND, SD, MT, WY, TX, OK, NE, MS, CO, NM, IA, KS, part of Mexico and Part of Canada.

I don't think you studied in Spain because your interpretation of "usted no se vale madre" is wrong. It just means "you're not worth a hill of beans" in a joking manner. I didn't mean to sound crass, sorry.

if you want an authentic powwow, go to Oglala Nation, Porcupine SD, first wknd of August I believe....

BUT if you want a powwow where tourists might be welcome, go to Daybreak Star Powwow in Seattle WA, I believe that one's third or fourth weekend in July. Or go to Gathering of Nations in New Mexico.

OMG, yes I did study in Spain, Madrid to be exact. I was going to make a comment--but knew better because it probably would come off bad, because as I remembered that it's more of an insult in Mexico, whereas it's a compliment in Spain. It's confusing, but whatever...

So I'll also nominate Minnesota as being credible for mention along with South Dakota, Oklahoma, Montana and North Dakota. I should have mentioned Minnesota in the first place since it is a Dakotah word meaning "many waters".

Wakalapi's choice of Oglala Nation for first week of August is most agreeable. For 2nd week I'd go with Lower Brule and 3rd week I'd go with Crow Creek: only because I'll be there.
