Doe skin leggings at pow wows

Hi, My mother is Occohannock which is part of the Powhatan Nation, in Virginia. She never took an interest in her native heritage, but I have. I have a friend who insists that men don't wear doe/buckskin at dances, but I have been to enough pow wows, to see what looks to me to be light doeskin leggings on men. Who is right here?

Well, after further clarification, my friend made more sense. She said It wasn't that I couldn't wear them, but that if I did I would sweat my *** off, literally :D

heck up here in Canada we wear em,,, and then some,,, fully decorated they look kewl!!!

Thanks he is my main totem,,, I still am waiting for a feather from this sweet bird too, given time creator might bless me!! Until then I will carve them from bones and wear them around my neck!!!

I hope and pray you get it. I have prayed for along time for a red tailed hawk feather. He is my secondary totem. My longest and most powerful totem is a Loon. (Don't laugh... well go ahead and laugh.) Loons are great. make people laugh, but can dive deep, they are funny, deep people with this totem. I prayed for a red tail hawk feather but the creator says wait.

I would not laugh at a loon lover,,, never,,, I respect the loon, compare one fact, with a breath of air it can swim for a very long time underwater, sometimes several hundred feet when avoiding contact, if we humans compared our weight and size to a loon with our so called higher inteligence,, we would have to swim nearly 500 feet on one breath of air underwater,,, I don't think there is anyone that can copy that sweet bird... if I see a feather from either of those birds, I will keep my eyes open, but I will not promise to watch "only" for you,,,,

I have my red tailed hawk feathers,,, I was honoured last part of the year by a very special gentleman with some of those feathers for doing him a favour.
Those I refuse to pass on but if I get my hands on any others Iwill think of you!
By the way I love taking pictures of these birds in the water, their eyes are wicked, the bright red is awesome,,, I once petted a Loon as it sat on a nest, it didn't move and it didn't feel threathened. I took lots of pictures with my Pentax K1000 & a 500 mm lens and used a tripod while in my canoe,,, sitting low and barely having my head above the edge of the canoe.

As well I have pictures of Ospreys on their nest with the baby, there is one lake I go to that has a nest way up high, about a hundred feet up, any way, there I have lain on the ground with the tripod over my head and the camerea focused on the edge of the nest,,, pity the lens couldn't grab the eyes, my binoculars actually pick up the sweet yellow/gold/black of the iris! Now that is stunning to see, specially knowing they can see so much more than we can,,, ever see the size of their eyes, their vision is also so much better than ours and here is a fact that is suprizing, if we compare the eyes of an eagle and compare it to ours, we would have to heave eyeballs that weigh 2.12 pounds each to have the same vison!!!!

Okay I am rambling,,,, just my 2 cents this great morning! How do I add a picture in here??? So I can show you mama loon and her baby??????????????????

I live near hawk Mt. in Pennyslvania. I will keep my eye open for a golden eagle feather. I have seen them, but being they were not my totem, I respectfully left them be. Some how finding one's own totem feather seems more " right" but also remember The song "I get by with alittle help from my friends.
THanks, and if you find a loon or Red tail feather I would be honored if you think of me. Birds are so graceful, yet raptors are strong preditors. I have a book printed here in the U.S. called the Raptor Almanac, you could probably get it on Amazon.com.

So then we will watch for each other,,, there are loons near to where I live as well so yes I will keep my eyes open,,, with a little help from my friends! soooooo true!
The osprey or fish eagle is great to watch, I can spend hours at a time watching them dive for fish to feed the baby,,, a few years ago I caught a bunch of rock bass and sunfish, tied their gills together with a strip of cat tail plant leaf and stunned them and tossed them into the water,,, the male osprey was seeing them move on the surface and got them all in a swoop, as he passed over my head he lost one wing feather, which is now in my feather box and when I look at it it gves me the chills to remember that great day!

You have a real enthusiasm for raptors and other birds. That is refreshing. They symbolize freedom, and keen eyesight. Many younger folks say their totems are wolves, bear, etc. Not that they couldn't be, but One must search themselves deep to find their totem. Birds (in my humble opinion) are so awe inspiring,
seeing a hawk swoop on a mouse or mole, or an Eagle on a fish, as I did when visiting Maine awhile back. If you ever get to maine, go on the Bird watching boat tour. I saw a nesting pair of Bald Eagles!

Seeing is believing,,, so true,,, I spend as much time while camping at my favorite spot just watching those fish eagles,,, since the first year of scouting out the parents I have seen many new babes come and go,,, they come back evey year and they remember me too. where I live I have the chance to hang road kill up as food,,, yepper I gather it and put it in a tree in my back yard,,,even had moose ribs there last year, the birds, a lot of them pick them clean,, in the day time it was black birds, starlings, crows, ravens and wood peckers as the average, then came the bald headed eagle,,, he really tore into the fllesh on those ribs,,, at night I get owls as well. Last weekend I had a doe walk across my yard and go down to the river and went to an opening in the ice for a drink of water,,,that was sweet to see as well.

I do that. I stopped last summer, picked up a dead racoon, threw it in the back of my truck, and took it home. Cut the tail off, and treated the end with salt, have it hanging in my livingroom. the rest was really beat up, so I hung it in a tree out front. I have about 2 acres, and the vultures, redtails, and goshawks had feast. I just picked up a road kill pheasant. cut off the wings and treated them with salt, they make nice fans. The tail feathers are in a bag. I have alot if you would like any phesant tail feathers let me know. My email is availible in my profile.

Good braintan Buckskins breath,are superior to anything as far a getting hot. Lots of of commercial tans and chemical tans get hot so the answer is use good brain tan or the best commercial tan. Doe shkin? I bet no one keeps track of which sex deer they are tanning.
