help me
I'm new to the powwow scene, last season was first year I got to attend several, I understand the puification before dancing and the smudging, just wondering what the reason is behind burning sage for the smudging? I love the smell of it and was wondering if held special meaning.

I don't think I really saw smudging for powwows until 1990 here in southern California. This really isn't something special unless one is Chumash or from the California Mission Band of Indians but hopefully there are others who can enlighten us. For us Dakotas, sage is known as the safest substance on this planet.

If you can find the book "Sacred Sage" I think it will answer your questions. At any Pow Wow I've gone to in the Middle TN area, someone has sage burning, and there will always be smudging before dancers get ready for the Grand Entry, sometimes several people are having smudging groups.
Lots of vendors will also have a smudge pot going as well. Since my step father is on oxygen, and asthamatic, we chose not to have a smudge pot ..... now if I can just get the old Geezer to quit smoking especially in the tent! Somehow this part makes no sense to me!

Lately it seems that all of this smudging is some type of new age fad. And it may be true especially since it seems that the novices seem to think that smudging will get them to native American heaven. As for those smuding groups, those get me to laughing and thinking to myself what is wrong with these people. But I think that a lot of non-natives feel better when they have a chance to feel native American and I would never ridicule anybody in public. For me, I like to burn sage when I get the chills because I'm alone in the house or I'm in an unfamiliar house. I'll burn the sage throughout each and every corner of the house including the closets. Afterwards, I've felt as if I could relax without bad feelings lingering about.

I agree with you 100%. It IS a fad to a lot of people who do it in public. Before it became a fad, it was done in private and in ceremony. Now people are making a show out of it. But, when in Rome . . . |

once again I am out of the loop.
Smudging? You mean smoking or fanning folks off with cedar like we do in NAC? . We use it other ways..Do they use those funky bundles of straw and sage the new age venders sell. Why before powow? they afraid of getting witched? Man I got to get out more...
