These materials all have aplace. I am sure some tribes down here use them in their own way. I burn some white sage but how I was taught we don't use it much. sweet grass and lots of cedar,Usually in private, This is rarley a public ceremony except at a funeral. I think you are all right that they make a show of it.

One cannot burn away evil spirits, only God can do that when they're cast into hell. Since sage is the safest and purest substance on this planet, any type of abominational being that inhabits your surroundings is just scooted away somewhere else. Don't get fooled into thinking we've got medicinal powers when burning sage.

You mean smoking or fanning folks off with cedar like we do in NAC? . We use it other ways..Do they use those funky bundles of straw and sage the new age venders sell.
Why before powow?
they afraid of getting witched?
Man I got to get out more...
Around here very few people use Cedar. I use it here in the house, for private reasons. I will use Sage when I have a bad migraine I will close the door to (what's supposed to be a Dining Room) my special room and light some sage, sit back with some Native music on low, crack open a window a couple inches, and just relax, before 10 to 15 minutes are up my headache is gone, and otherwise I'd be on meds and still throwing up!

...This is still pretty serious stuff around here. Once upon a time one was supposed to be sanctioned (in a number of ways) to use cedar. Sage was used mostly in Sundance ways, Sweetgrass I am told was for just about everybody. There are lots of plant medicines that these powow boys mentioned earlier should not be using. Again we see too little understanding or as stated just plain showoffs.

I think sage and cedar and all that good stuff is being missused today, there are certain times you use it, you dont use it in front of everyone at a powwow so you can show off your fannin motion. White people are so silly arent they....I got more on this but Im tooooo sleepy to attack this subject....so burn baby burn(cedar)

Do you think all tribes, indians , used cedar, sweetgrass or sage? I dont think so, just cause smoke touches some things does not make it all better. The only people I let use cedar were "medicine men"

I do not know about many other tribes. But you sure do not have to be a "Medicine Man" or at lest what I call one to use these. Medicine men have MUCH more that the use of a few little medicines that were availble to the whole people. In my youth I have been to Comanche men who had power, that is a whole different ball game.
There are sanctions to use each one. Sweetgrass( for Many Oklahoma tribes) was open for most people to use. In the old days Cedar had to be passed to you, but today most NAC people use it regularly as it is part of the service.
You and others can denegrade these rites if you want, but they are important our cultures. Which parts of our teachings do we abondon? They come as a whole. I believe and was taught there is power in most materials. they are tools. Use cedar for this, Eagle feathers for that, otter for something else. Our old folks discovered the uses for these items and passed it to us. I fear I hear too much european religion in your disclaimers.
If I misinterpret I apologise ahead of time.

I dont think the Eurocentric beliefs have done anything to me. Just observe a lot of people swinging a buzzard feather around (the feather is a joke for people who think everything I say is serious) blowing smoke in my face making me gag,lol....I dont want just anyone pattin me with a feather.

I cedared under my bed....

It seems that others are not having a good time seeing that our sort of entertainment is sacrilegous to the forest gods. The topic started off as sage (I think) and from sage being the safest substance on this planet others from what I'm assuming (remember don't assume!) seem to think that there are substances that are equal to sage. I'm learning something new everyday and I hope to learn until the day I die. So, if we've got others to enlighten us, this 50.0009% native is listening. Wait, maybe I can't be enlightened on the internet because of the cedar regulators. Boy, I hope I didn't put my foot in my mouth (Isn't a there a disease with these symptons?).
