Pow wow grounds

What is the protocol for getting the pow wow grounds ready for a pow wow? Is there a set process to be done that all pow wows follow?

There is no standardized way to set up an arena.

When you're in Crow Country, you do it Crow style.

When you're in Kiowa Country you do it Kiowa Style.

When your in Ojibway Country you do it Jib style.

When you're at the Gathering or Schemitzun. . . Hmmmmmm?

O!What about here in California? We have just about every tribe imagineable; maybe the committees just flip a coin.

For some reason they have some weird hang-ups in Cali.

I always hear "that is a southern powwow or that powwow is northern style."

They seem to have a north vs. south kinda' mentality there.

Then there are the casino powwows that are sponsored by Cali Indians but hire plains Indian consultants.

Go figure?

THat becuse Cali skin did not PW...we have Big Times or our own trible ceramonies. PW is somthing that other tribes brought to cali during the relocation period. Many casinos host big times with their own tribal commtnities, and for the one that do PW, they just want a lot of folks to come...so they DO cater to the
non- cali ndn's. And When the colleges put them on (Standford, UCLA.)..... you have a buch of diffrent tribes putting it together, using what they learnd about PW'ing. And whiel I love a good PW.....nothing beats a good old cali Big Time with your own folks,dances and songs!oh and tradish eats too!

I keep reading about these big times? What is big time compared to a powwow and do they have contests? Not trying to be mean just wondering because I've always lived in California but never been to one.

Well it's a little diffrent depending on what tribe you are but usually it's your tribes and some times other bands getting to gether doing their songs, dances, eats. But in Cali lots of tribes do their own tradish ceramonies too, speparte from a BIg Time......Dose that help? Not good at expliaing it in writing.
