Life after powwows

Powwows are a way of life for some people.

Some top dancers actually make a living off their contest winnings and travel year 'round.

But . . . eventually age catches up with EVERYONE.

Top drums have come . . . and gone.

Champion dancers have come . . . and gone.

What is a powwow person to do if they have dedicated their whole life to following the powwow trail and not learned other skills to survive???

Is there life after powwows?

I've seen some older women sew and bead for other people. I don't really know how they survive, never thought about it but I hope they are warm and comfortable for the Winter Season.

some of them old timers be trying to come back in the arena and they crack me up they think they are still hot to trot.some can be the powwow comedians for us all

This is how I am still in the scene, my back is damaged beyond repair so I can't dance or boogie, and I have about 6 others that are together with me. They all have their pains as well and this way we share a stand and take turns watching the tables. We are so tight as a team that sometimes a small signal is all we need to spare someone for a while.

It is really sad. . .

I know of three ex champion men's fancy dancers that are destined to live on their memories.

They now are supported by their spouses/snags, live in Indian housing and take care of their spouses/snags kids.

Do you know ex champions with similar stories?
