I just ate my lunch so's I can post without drooling.
When we travel around the great lakes region I love walleye and wild rice, wild rice soup, and real corn soup (not the dried sweet corn version or the canned hominy version). Back home I love the wojapi, buffalo meat in soup, boiled meat, or burgers. Prairie Island powwow used to have a stand that sold a walleye dinner taht was the greatest. I remember dancing in MT and ND sometimes and there was a food vendor from Wyoming that sold really good burritos. When we go to Kinder powwow in Louisiana, I love the the shrimp on a stick, red beans and rice, gumbo, any kind of catfish. Of course in Oklahoma, that's the only place to get good BBQ and good meatpies. At Haskell powwow there's a vednor that sells fried green tomatoes, cobbler, red beans and rice with sausage. That's my favorite stand there. Any powwow that sells fry bread or skillet bread. |

In South Dakota we've got wojapi which is choke cherry preserves that one puts on fry bread. In southern California the best thing for the after 49 hangover would be menudo which is a red chile based soup from Mexico and is comprised of the cow's stomach lining, hominy and the pata de res or cow's foot. When serving this must be topped off with diced onions, ground oregano, fresh cilantro and a squeezed lemon wedge.

SWEET POTATO Pie!, oh wait, that was at my grandmothers house after the pow wow. I guess corn dogs dipped all the way to the stick in ketchup.

My family does a dish we call Tamale Pie.
It's a Choctaw stew thing that every family does a bit differently. My family's version is made with chili powder, ground meat, cornmeal, corn, tomatoe sauce, milk and egg, and then baked in the oven for about 45 minutes. My 'version' contribution is chopped black olives, ground turkey and I use blue cornmeal when I can find some good stuff. My total comfort food! |
